The Way Things Are
"Do you think we can please hurry this up?" Mark yelled, from the back of the moving van.
"Depends on if your going to stop complaining and help me load this stuff up." The moving man chuckled back.
Emily yelled out of the window of the car, "I'm not feeling well, how much longer will this take?"
"What is it with you and your wife complaing?!" The man raised his voice just a little. "Just be patient please, becuase we're almost done!" The man contintued talking.
He turned to Mark and asked "Why is your wife so impatient?" He meant it more as a comment rather than an insult.
"I think she's just a little irritated. With the move and Melissa and everything else. Ya know?" Mark replied.
"Oh, i see. Who is Melissa?"
"She's our daughter, she'll be five next month."
"Oh that's sweet. Speaking of her i don't see a four year old running around here, where is she? How is she taking this move?"
"Seeing as how she is really mature for her age, she's taking it considerably well. And she's not here because she is with her aunt Tina. "
"Well that's good news. Anyways, we're done moving everything so why don't you and your wife follow behind me to your new house."
"Ok, sounds good."
Two months earlier.
The headlights of the car came into view as the little girl perked up from where she was sitting. The rain was beating down so hard, it seemed like the sky was crying.
"Mom! Somebody's here!" A girl named Melissa yelled.
"Hun, will you please get the door for me?" The mother, Emily, asked.
"Sure." The husband, Mark, replied.
"Can I help you?" Mark asked.
"Yes, i am here on very important buisness, and i would like to come in to discuss it." The man said. He pushed Mark out of the way, and put his coat on the hook where the
rest of the coats were hung.
"Make yourself at home." Mark smirked sarcasticly.
The man sat down on the couch and opened his briefcase. He promptly put on his glasses. And said "Now then. I am sorry to have to be the one to tell you this but your agents
estate has overfiled mine."
Mark coughed and said "Sir, i do not mean to be rude, but that makes no sense at all."
"I can see i am going to have to take this extra slow for you." The man huffed.
Emily raised her eyebrow as if to say, "Don't talk to my husband that way." But she kept her mouth closed and said nothing.
The man countinued on, "Your agents estate has overfiled mine means that, you and your family will have to move with NO questions asked. Please have your bags backed
before two months have elapsed. The government has sent me here. I know nothing more. So please do not ask me any questions. "I am sorry to have to..."the man started to say, but
before he could finish Mark got up from where he was sitting and walked outside. He sat down on a swinging bench that was supported by two heavy chains. He looked out beyond
the steps into the rain. Thoughts began to race into his mind.
"Two months? Two months?!? How am i going to find a house that is affordable for the family in that less amount of time? Even so i am uneasy about how Emily is taking
this. "Maybe we could move to somewhere close to Tina. That way when Emily and i are working and if something happens to Melissa she has somewhere to go. Yeah, i think i will fo
that. But what is Tina has...." Mark's thoughts were cut off as the man came out of the doorway.
Mark stood up.
"I am sorry to have to deliever this news to you on such a depressing night. It is only my job. I must be going. Goodnight." The man opened his umbrella, walked down the
steps and into his car. As he drove away Emily came out of the house.
"What are we going to do?" She asked.
"I have a plan. It's not clear, but a plan none the less."
"Well can you tell me what it is so i can stop worrying?"
"Not tonight. Twomorrow maybe but not tonight. It's 11:00. Melissa is probably very tired, so lets tuck her in."
"Ok."
Marked walked inside, Emily followed.
"Ok young lady time for bed." Mark announced to his daughter.
"Dad? Do i have to? I'm not tired! What was that man talking about. Are we really going to move? Where are we moving to?. Why?" Emily questioned.
"Enough questions. Time for bed."
"But i'm not tired." Emily said rubbing her eyes.
"Yes you are. It's time for bed now."
"Ok. Ok."
Emily followed her dad up the stairs to her bedroom. Mark opened the door and tucked Emily in. He gentley kissed her on the forhead. "Don't worry." He voiced.
"Everything will be fine. You'll see."
