Silent Knowlegde (XI)
|
-November 16, 2007- Gloria- (back in court room) Christopher’s answers to almost every question were the same as the ones he gave me the night of questioning. Once the bailiff led Clark into the room the jury’s eyes refocused to someone new. His lawyer was tall, taller than most men with an over comb. How incredibly gross. The lawyer went through the basics; name, relationship, where he supposedly was, and why he would and could never do it. All lies, most of the time. Then, the prosecuting attorney, Harold Bunkman, a short, fat Italian man had his turn to question him. I’ve known Harold for a long time, worked with him on at least fifteen cases. He stood up and straightened his pearl white tie. “Hello Mr. Sandell” he begun, “So lets talk about your relationship with Heather and Vince Hamcott”.“Okay” Clark answered. “Now you said that you had no problem with any of the family members, right?”“Yes” he grunted.“So you’ve never been in a verbal or physical fight with anyone of them before?” Harold asked.“No”“What about the day they told you they wanted to move?”Clarke shifted uncomfortable in the stand, “No”“Really,” He went on, “Many people would be upset over this, but not you?”“No, well, yes, but it wasn’t anything huge”“Is murder ‘anything huge’?”Then defense rose, “Objection, Your Honor he’s taunting my-”“Over ruled” the judge snapped.Harold smiled at the judge, “please answer”“Murder is the worst thing anyone can do” Clark said through his teeth.“Have you ever been in trouble with the law before?” “Yes, when I was younger, but I’m-”Harold interrupted, “All I’m asking is for yes or no right now”He sighed, “Yes”“Please tell the court what for”“For having illegal substances on me” he said lowering his voice a decibel.“In fact, ladies and gentile, that illegal substance was cocaine, right Mr. Sandell?”“That’s the one,” he answered,“Have you been involved with cocaine anytime after that?”“Objection!” bellowed the opposing attorney. The judge looked at Harold, “Get to your point or move on” he warned.“Okay,” he continued, “Mr. Sandell, have you been involved with cocaine any time after that?”Clark, slightly shaking, wiped his forehead, “No”“Really,” he faked sounding surprised, “Because I have information telling me that you’ve been dealing for the last four years, can you explain that to us Mr. Sandell?”Clark buried his face in his hands and paused. He looked back at the lawyer, “ I can’t do this anymore” His lawyer looked furiously at him and Harold turned quickly to look at him, “Do what?” “This, all this, I can’t cover it anymore” he said trembling.“Cover what?” “I was there the night they were murdered,” he confessed. His lawyer shot up to ask for a recess, but caught the judge’s eye and sat back down. Clark went on, “ I was talking to a, a friend late at night, I was outside, I even wore Chris’s shoes because they were the first pair I could find. I heard a bunch of ruckus inside” he paused.“Go on” Harold demanded.“and then the side door opened and Tabby Hamcott ran out of it”Tabby stood up and screamed, “How dare you! The demons have eaten your soul!” The judge stood up and hit the gavel “Take her out, Calm her down, there is no evidence to convict, Just calm her down,” he instructed. A man from security led Tabby out side to sit down because she wouldn’t stop shouting. Religious freaks are more annoying than ignorant people. Harold resituated himself and then began again, “If you claim Tabitha Hamcott murdered her own brother and sister-in-law, explain why the boot tracks were found in front of the crime scene.”He rubbed the temples of his head, “ I- I went in there. It was terrible, it was just so terrible”. He began to cry.“Then why didn’t you come to the authorities?” he questioned.“Be-because she threatened me”“Tabitha threatened what?”“She threatened to tell Chris about my dealing, she over heard me on the phone, she knows Chris, But, but you found out anyways” he claimed. He began to cry like a child. He was obnoxious and the jury’s faces were filled with disorientation and pitty.“We’re taking a recess,” the judge announced.
