* * * *-November 5, 2007- Lacey

The next morning Serina was sitting in the chair across from my desk telling me about her grandma in a nursing home.  She moved her hands as she spoke, that’s kind of funny, she’s not even Italian. “There are numbers you can call, to report neglect. Don’t let them fix it themselves, they won’t” I informed her. “How dare anyone do that to those poor people? Its their job to provide care, not leave them to take care of themselves” I exclaimed.

“I know it’s horrible,” she cried.
“We should have numbers, shouldn’t we?” I said thinking we are social services. Once she left I called Johnny. I had Serina close the door behind here because I didn’t need people hearing this conversation. I didn’t need their opinion. I picked up my black receiver and dialed his number. It rang twice then he answered. He sounded groggy, like he was still asleep at 1:50p.m.“Good morning sunshine!” I chimed.“Oh hey Lacey, I’a just got out of the shower”“Really? You sound like you just woke up” I said.“Well… maybe I just got out of the shower from last night,”“What? That made no sense”“Well that’s what you get for’a wakin’ me up” He yawned.I laughed, “Okay then, I’ll let you get back to your very hectic day you have going on there” “Wait, why’d you call me in the first place?” he questioned.“Oh, uh, to tell you I wont be able to make it tonight, I have a new case, lots of things to do”There was a slight pause and then he said, “Are you sure, because I think you need to talk, and cry, and lean on some one”.“No I’m fine, and you know me; my tear ducts were sewn shut”Disappointedly he replied, “What ever, you know my number”Then we hung up.            I was driving back to the Hamcott’s, preparing for day two. I was thinking of ways to ingratiate Tabby. After the mishap about my tattoo I knew her opinion of me wasn’t very good. Compliment her, maybe, God I hate it when people judge.             The sky was cloudy gray, and I prayed it would clear up. I needed to get closer to Alison because some how Tabby doesn’t seem the type who could get close to her, or maybe I was just judging her back. With selective mutism a child may feel comfortable to speak to someone close to them; I wanted to be that person. This part was rather difficult for me. Ever so often a child would come along who would be afraid to open up to me. I soon realized that they wouldn’t open up unless I did first. Unfortunate for them, they didn’t realize I had nothing to open up. Just then I jumped forward from the sensation in my back pocket.  I shifted myself up reaching into my back pocket and retrieving my cell phone. The driver behind me flipped me off because I slowed down and swerved. I winced at the screen that flashed “Police Dept.” across it. “Hello?” I answered.“Mz. Rivale” the sharp voice stung my insides. “Its Lacey” I said.“Mz. Rivale is the professional way I address acquaintances. The Hamcotts are due in my office the 11th… One week” she snapped.“ Gloria, I know that’s one week” She scoffed, “Well then” “Well, then I’ll see you in one week,” I said calmly.“Can’t wait” she muttered. How petty can this witch be?“Oh I’m just counting down the days,” I snapped, and then hung up before I got carried away.            I tossed my phone in my purse, where it should have belonged. How dare she? “Well thennn” what a little… No, no, I should be sorry for her. She must be a miserable woman. I pity her, yeah I pity her. I didn’t let that conversation spoil my mood; that would have been letting her win. I won. No matter how she looks at it.            I turned my CD player back on and turned to number 1.                         Poor sweet innocent thing dry your eyes and testify.                        You know you live to break me don’t deny; sweet sacrifice.                                    When I pulled into drive way. I didn’t even think about being rude, my mind was preoccupied with other issues. This time, before I knocked an elderly man opened the door. He had light blue eyes and a chiseled jaw. White frosted the sides of his black hair. His back was slightly hunched, almost in pain, but his stone face led on nothing.He met my gaze mumbling, “You must be the child care thing”. I smiled; another first impression. “Yes, Lacey Rivale”. He looked me over; head to toe and gave no expression through his face. “You… come in” he directed. Just then Tabby immerged from the kitchen into the dinning room.“Darrell” she bossed undermining, “You tell me when she’s here before you open the door”.“Hello,” I began, “How are you today?”“The Lord is keepin’ us well” she answered. “I’d like to get to know Alison today. I was thinking about taking her to the park” “No, you’ll stay here” she quickly replied. “But I’d like to be with her-”“No! Alison belongs here, safe”Mr. Hamcott stepped in, “Maybe she should get her out’a house.” I looked over to the emotionless man that was standing up for me. He continued, “She’s been in her room all day, it’s not healthy. Never comes out, never speaks”.Tabby looked at her husband, “and now we give permission to take her away from her safe haven only to make this child worse?” she protested.  Then, Darrell looked at her wearily, almost saying with his eyes; please just listen. “She can get fresh air and play with someone,” he told her.“I play with her” she defended.“Not the way Lacey will”“Just go sit down, I’ll handle this,” she instructed.He walked away slowly throwing his hands up in the air. Suddenly I was turning over the names in my head and realized that it made no sense; how could Alison be a Hamcott and Tabby be too.“Tabby,” I asked, “How are you still a Hamcott?” Just changing the subject“Darrell changed his name for me”“Really?”“Yes the good Lord wanted my good name kept. This way Vince and I would always be connected” she rubbed her neck.I chuckled, “Blood wasn’t good enough?” joking I remarked.“No” she dryly answered. “Please let me take Alison, Here,” I reached into me purse, “I’ll even give you my card, you can call me anytime”.I handed the small white piece of paper. It had my business and cell phone number, email address, and even fax.  She took it out of my hands and into consideration. “Fine, but don’t think God won’t see sin and corruption” she warned. Dear god. “I know, my mom raised me to love and respect.”            She raised her eyebrows at me, reflecting the sun into her vibrant green eyes making them glow. She abruptly scurried to the hallway and vanished. Two minutes later she reappeared with Alison. The small splendor wore pink sweat pants and a matching sweatshirt from Disney World.  Her hair was in a ponytail that was falling out. Strands of hair already made it out of the rubber band’s grasp.             She inched over to me and smiled. “Hey there Alison, I’m Lacey, remember?” I whispered gently.  She tilted her head curiously. “Do you wanna walk to the park with me?” I asked.She was silent and still.“We can do something else if you want,” I suggested. She shook her head slowly one time.“No? No park?” I asked. Alison shook her head vigorously this time and pointed towards the door behind me. “Yes park?” I guessed. She smiled even showing her teeth. I came down to her level, “Okay lets get some shoes on”.            After her little, and adorable shoes here on she shot up running out the door. I quickly followed her. Don’t lose the kid, Lacey. I came to the garage door where she stood with a marble white and purple ball in her hands.
