Chapter 8

Justice

Next day at work was really some tension. Lita was quiet and that wasn’t very usual for her. I wanted to ask her what was wrong but left it alone. She would look at me only through her peripheral other than making clear eye contact with me.

I began to believe she was mad at me. Why? I had no clue. But I kept my mouth shut. She might be on her period so that could be another thing. I reassured myself that she was just going through a small phase and left it at that.

I went into the dining area and noticed Marissa’s brother standing there. He looked at me and frowned and made his way to an empty table for two. I was confused by his brief expression. I walked over to him and pulled out my pad.

“What would you like this evening?” I said in a low voice.

“To talk to you,” He said pointing to the seat across from him.

“Sir I’m on duty,” I said putting the pad I pulled out back in the pocket of my apron.

“You’re part owner of this restaurant you should be able to take a break anytime you want. Wouldn’t you agree?”

He had a point but I really didn’t want to deal with him because I just knew he was going to talk about the offer Marissa addressed to me. Nonetheless though, I sat down across from him waiting to hear what he had to say.

“I have concerns regarding you and my sister’s association.” He began, propping his arms onto the table.

“Continue,” I said.

“Well it’s come to my acknowledgement that she has offered you money to own this restaurant.”

“Yes. You didn’t know?”

“Yes, I knew, I conversed with her about it. I’m speaking now on your rejection to the offer. This has really… devastated Marissa. And I am going to tell you that she’s-” He paused and looked at the door.

“What?” I said.

“Excuse me Robert.” I heard the voice of Marissa speak, “There is business that you and I have to discuss immediately. You must postpone this meeting you’re having.” She said switching from me to Robert with her eyes.

He nodded, “Sure.” And with that they left together. I was left there in a ball of confusion. I got up shaking my head and went to the back. I wondered what he was trying to say about her. I got a call through my cell phone. I slid it out of my pocket and looked at the name. It was a blocked number. “Hello?”

“Hey Jay this is RJ,” my sister’s boyfriend stated, “Where’s Lita?”

“She’s here working, why are you calling my phone?”

“Oh. She’s not answering her phone.”

That boggled my mind because I just seen her get off of her phone. So maybe she and RJ were having a disagreement and that’s what caused her attitude.

“Ok well do you want her to talk to you?” I asked.

“No, that’s ok. Just tell her to come straight to my house after work.”

“Ok.” I said hoping they worked out whatever they were going through so she can act like her normal self. We ended our call and I gave Lita the message and all she did was nod without looking at me for even a second.
