I glared at him.

Monique:You best get out.

Vonte:Listen to me.I am so sorry.I'll get down on my knees.I already prayed like 500 times for your forgiveness.I know you probably won't,but I hope you do.Ok?

I was silent.I didn't want to talk to him.He turned to walk out.But my heart argued with me thoughts and my heart won.

Monique:Vonte wait.

He turned around in astonishment.

Monique:How could you?!?

Vonte:I didn't want that to happen.I wanted you to have the baby.I would of got ova it.

Monique:No!Not just that but...how could you want to leave me in the first place?We had a good thang goin' and you had to ruin it!And look where we ended up.Now I gotta go through life knowin' that there's my baby in Heaven that I didn't even get to see!

He was silent.

Monique:I'll forgive you Vonte.Just not now.Because this was...I can't even describe it.

He sat in the chair next to my bed.He grabbed my hand.

Vonte:I know how you feel too.I mean the baby Keana was s'posed to have didn't die but I still sorta lost somethin' I coulda had.

Monique:It wasn't yours though!The one I lost was mine!Evidently you don't understand.I can hate you for the rest of my life!

He looked down.Tears started rolling down my cheeks again.

Monique:But I won't.

He looked up at me.

Monique:Even thought I lost somethin' I began to love...(sighs)...Lord knows I'm sorry to say this,but I'm glad.

Vonte looked confused.

Monique:My life woulda been screwed.Not to mention I would be so out of shape.

I chuckled and wiped my tears.

Monique:Vonte,I wasn't ready.How could I go to school and provide for a baby.I'm not cut out for that I prolly woulda commited suicide.I don't have to go through it now.But all I got to say is rest in peace to my child.

I smiled for the first time.A real smile.

Monique:Lord knows I love him or her.

Vonte softly caressed my cheek.

Vonte:I love you.

Monique:I love you too.

We embraced each other.I haven't felt this good in a while.His touch was like a rose.We hugged for a few minutes and let go.

Vonte:I gotta go.Should I tell Calvin to come in?

Monique:Yeah.

He left and a few seconds later Calvin came out.I extended my arms and we hugged also.My mom came in and it became a group hug.

My mom didn't want me to go to school but I wanted to.I felt fresh and new.It was 4 days after the surgery.I spent a few days at home to kinda heal.But I had to face the people soon or later.

That day it was sunny.Not a bad cloud in the sky.The hood was as usual full of kids skippin' and old folks gossipin' about them.

I walked with Keith who been protecting me from anything.If a bug flew by me best believe he gon' be the one swatting at it.He held my hand as if I was still pregnant.

Monique:Keith,I'm all good thanks.

Keith:Sorry.I gotta take care of ya after what happened last time.

Monique:I told you we cool now.

Keith:I know but I still need to be there just in case.You never know.

Monique:Thank you bro.

We went to school.Everybody was shocked to see I wasn't pregnant anymore.

Tiffany:What happened?!?

Monique:It died.Long story.

Tiffany:No it's not.Tell me what happened.

Monique:Vonte accidentally hit it.

I mumbled.

Tiffany:Oh shit!Vonte killed my god-daughter?!?

Monique:Sssshhh!It was an accident.I already know it or we wouldn't be cool.And how you know you was gon' be the god-mother? 

Tiffany:Girl,it was so obvious.But y'all cool?

Monique:Yeah.

Tiffany:You sure?

Monique:Yeah yeah.

Tiffany:Ok I'll take yo word.

I smiled and put one arm around her shoulder.

Monique:That's why I love ya.Because you're black.Just playin.'

Tiffany:Hey I got white in me!

Monique:I love white people too.They ain't crazy like us black folk.

We laughed.

*End of school.*

I looked for Vonte to talk to him in private.I found him in the alley looking as if he was waiting for me.I put my hands on my hips.I walked towards him slowly until we were face to face.We stared at each other for a minute.

Monique:Hey.

Vonte:Hey.

I smiled.

Monique:I gotta talk to you.

Vonte:Talk.

I looked down trying to find the words as if they were on the ground.I looked back up at Vonte.

Monique:I know we don't go out anymore.But I wanted you to know with all my heart I forgive you.I love you Vonte.

He smiled.

Monique:And what ever happens you'll always be my first love.My first true love.And you'll always be my Superman.The one who saved me while I was in distress.My Gangsta ass Superman.

We both chuckled.

Monique:I love you boy.

Vonte:I love you too girl.

We hugged.

Vonte:One more time.

Monique:What?

He looked at me and pushed his face toward mine.We passinately kissed.After that I smiled.

Vonte:I'll see you.

Monique::Yeah,you will.

He smiled and dissapeared out the alley.Mine.Even though we weren't together he was mine, and I was his.My Superman is a gangsta.Damn right.And I loved it.

This is the story I told my son all the time.Davonte Wright,Jr.I look back at those days.I laugh,cry,smile,frown.Everything.But it was wirth while.Because me,my son, and my husband Davonte Wright,Sr. also known as Vonte are one now.
