Blue Eyed Wonder [Chapter 10]

Chapter 10

She hesitantly leaned in, bringing her face very close to his.  Carla breathed in and got lost in his scent.  She finally came to her senses and realized what she was about to do.  The look on Bretts face was a look of sincere fright, so Carla backed away.

"Sorry," she blushed, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. "I guess I'm pushing limits."

"As am I," Brett replied. "Just being here with you can turn out so dangerous."

He flashed another one of his grins, and Carla melted on the inside.  Suddenly she realized a part of the story was missing.

"Why would he have Mark rape me?  How will that help him out?" she thought, forgetting Brett's powers.

"Ah, I was wondering when you would get to that part," he said, chuckling slightly.

Carla frowned at Brett.  He frowned right back and then hugged her.

"I know this is a serious issue, and something you're not fully understanding.  The issue isn't what I'm laughing at."  He continued, "I'm laughing at your innocence, and your naivity.  It's only making me want you more and more."

Carla smiled, but Brett's embrace suddenly became more rigid.  The warmth left as he pulled away.

"You're mom's rounding the corner. I should go," Brett stated, sounding worried.

Carla smiled, "No, it's fine. I'll introduce you as a new friend from school. She won't mind."

Brett shrugged as they watched a maroon '02 Taurus pulled into the driveway.

Carla's mom got out of the car, seeming slightly agitated.

"Hi mom! How was work?" Carla questioned, trying not to upset her even more.

"Ciao bambina. It was busy, I'm very tired," she sighed.  Her Italian accent was heavy, making some of her English hard to understand.

"Chi è questo ragazzo?" Carla's mother asked her.
((Translates into "Who is this boy?"))

"This is Brett. He's a friend of mine from school.  He walked me home today, and we've been sitting outside talking. I haven't had a chance to get inside yet."

Carla's mother flashed a smile at Brett as he came over and took her hand.

"Hello, Mrs. Madder. It's very nice to meet you," he smiled as he bent down and kissed her hand.

"Is this boy Italian?" her mother joked. "I like him," she smiled as she went inside.

Brett laughed out loud as he said, "I'm far from Italian."

Carla laughed along, until she remembered what she needed answered.

"So how is Mark raping me going to get me to like Harrison more?"

"Well, he is going to play the whole 'just happened to stop over card' before Mark can get your pants off.  He'll see Mark, yell at him, throw a few punches, and you'll be over him like fleas on a dog."

Carla laughed as his analogy, but then frowned when she realized what was going on.

"Brett, I won't let this happen. But I don't know how to stop him," Carla said as she sat back on the ground and pulled her knees into her chest.

"This goes back to the fact that I love you so much, I won't let myself hurt you.  If I can keep myself, a bloodsucking, neck biting vampire, away from you, I can sure as hell keep some mortal ass from hurting you."

Suddenly, Brett tensed up.  He bared his teeth and his eyes went black as night.  He let out a low growl, and assumed a pounce position.

"He's here," he barely said above a whisper.

"Who? Harrison or Mark?" she asked.

"Harrison.  He's planning to ask you out for ice cream tonight.  I highly recommend you don't go."

"I won't. But you can't be standing like that. He'll know something's up," Carla stated.

Brett left his pounce and sat in a chair.  However he was still tense, and his eyes still midnight black.

They suddenly heard footsteps up the stairs to the porch.
