Chapter 8

"What was he thinking? Surely, it couldn't have been that bad," Carla pondered out loud.

"Surely, it was," Brett mocked, smiling.

Suddenly, his smile turned into a frown.

"What's the matter?" she asked, noticing his change.

"I have to tell you everything now, for this to make sense," he breathed.  He drew a long slow breath in, and hesitantly began his statement.

"As you can tell, I'm different," he frowned as Carla snickered. "Please stop."

Carla stopped immediately.

"I have mind reading powers; everyone in my family has them.  It's a power that comes with being...being a vampire."

Suddenly Carla's jaw dropped to the floor.  She shook her head and mumbled, "No, this can't be happening."

"Yes, it is. Anyways," he continued, annoyed, "I've been raised with my father and sister."

"What about your mother? How did you and your sister and your father get that way? You owe me this much," Carla questioned.

"My father was bit by some hunters.  They go after human blood.  At the time, he was married to my mother, and me and my sister Aribella were 2. We're twins, you see. Well, when he was bit, he went into hiding for about a year.  He trained himself to live off of animal blood.  When he came home, he explained everything to my mother.  She was so stupid, and wanted to become like him.  She wanted immortality and everlasing beauty. So foolish."

He paused for a minute, then continued, "Since she was his first human, he couldn't control himself. He killed her, on accident.  As sick as it seems, he trained himself further off of her blood.  He vowed that he didn't want that to happen to anyone else he loved. He despised the taste.  Two years later, he trusted himself enough to bite me and my sister.  He's trained us to feed off of animals."

"Then what's the problem with me? Why are you avoiding me? Why am I tempt..."

The questions spat out of her mouth and then suddenly she realized, "You want my blood."

Brett smiled, "Yes I do. But I won't allow myself. You see, you have the most tempting scent I've ever come across.  It's mesmorizing.  I dare to say I'm in love.  Since I love you so much, I vow not to hurt you.  I know you smell amazing, and you must taste even better."

Carla sat in silence, allowing him to continue.

"Anyways, this brings me to Harrison.  I heard him thinking.  He cares about you deeply.  So much, he's willing to hurt you to make him seem like a hero."

Carla was now shivering. "What do you mean?"

Brett moved next to Carla on the ground of the porch and wrapped his arms around her.

"A very daring move, I do say so myself," he stated proudly.

Although his body was ice cold, she felt warm all over. The shivering stopped.

"That's better," he smiled, perhaps the most genuine smile she'd see since she met him. "Now, Harrison's plan was...."
