The figure in the shadows stirred and my heart fell. Slowly he stood, immersing himself in the light. Wisteria smiled pleasurably at the expression on my face. An unearthly pang made itself known within my chest. Oh, Fate… I thought to myself. The pitying need to comfort him was more than just influential towards my actions. Sorrow etched its revolting lines into his stunning face, carved hollow crescents under his magnificent metallic eyes, normally bright with happiness. The urge to touch him compelled me, but I spared him the agony in the enjoyment Wisteria would get from the gesture.

Pulling a knife from a hidden sheath in his gauntlet, he sliced through the rope that tied my arms. With a dull ache, feeling began to regain itself in my hands. Gently, without looking at my face, he took my elbow in his tender hand and guided me into the hall. He led me up a flight of stairs and into another vast corridor.

When we neared the end of it, he paused in front of a door, head bowed in order to avoid my gaze. He pressed down on the latch and the door swung inward. He towed me into the room, walking mechanically.

I wanted so desperately to speak to him. I needed for him to acknowledge me… He drifted to the corner, stooping low, and I heard the trickle of water being wrung from a rag. I lowered myself unsteadily onto the bed, feeling the overload of emotions I had been suppressing creep up on me.

Fate joined me on the wrought iron structure, damp cloth in hand. With the tips of his fingers, he coaxed my chin into swiveling until I was facing him. The eyes that had been so hollow before flooded with compassion and sadness, becoming liquid silver… Soothingly, he dabbed at the dried blood that caked my swollen nose and chin.

A chronic ache settled in my chest, each ticking second it dwelled there, throbbing, with every breath it worsened. Lungs burning, tears flooded my eyes as I gazed into his face. Then, my guard fell, and a single tear slipped from its cage behind my lashes, rolling down my cheek and onto my chin where it hung in a glistening droplet, before falling onto the tattered sheets where it will forever rest. It was followed by another, then a whole cascade of them rained down my face. Sobs halfheartedly repressed quaked me.

Fate smoothed back my matted hair with the palm of one hand, erasing the wet trail of tears with the back of the other. Both palms drifted to my cheeks. His hands glided to my neck, arms hooking under my own, twining around behind me before closing the distance between us with a warm embrace. His fingers twisted into the mess of my brown hair; he buried his face there, inhaling deeply and releasing his breath with a heaving shudder. Clinging to him, I hid my face in the nape of his neck, sobbing uncontrollably. I cried for the circumstance, my father… for Edyn and Gladis… for Fate.

His lips parted and hovering over my ear, he whispered soothing words in his ancient language with a hiss or warm breath. They drifted over me, swirling around me in a humming lull; caressed my skin and eased the tension in my body. Velvet tendrils secured themselves into my soul—easing me into a peaceful slumber.
