My Most Valuable Possession (not really a story)

note: This isn't really a story.. I just wrote this a while ago.. before I found out my Dad had passed away.

I was recently asked a question "What is your most valuable possession?"
I was unsure of my answer.. but today as I was going through some junk I found a letter from my Dad. I haven't seen or heard from my dad since I was like..9. And the last I heard from him he was in the hospital. So for all I know right now.. he might...be dead. I never really got to know him... He was only in my life for a short time. Before I thought that I didn't love him.. but reading this letter that I completely forgot about..I think I changed my mind. I started to think... what if he had died? I don't think I have ever told him that I loved him. and.. I just want everyone to know that life is short.. so always say what you want to be said.. because you might never have another chance to say it.

So here's the letter. read it if you want. It's probably not even worth your time.. but I've been crying over it all day. :


My dear China doll, (he gave me that nickname when I was a baby)

Well, I guess you're getting to be big now, and it makes me very happy knowing you are a smart, funny, beautiful girl, with a whole life ahead of you. In that life, there is a lot of happiness, sadness as well. Of happiness I wish you much. Of sadness little. But whatever you get, remember that I will always love you.

I hope one day you can really see how I care so much for you, and want the best for you...and that you DO have a Dad, and that this would make you happy to know. and you, and I too, will be happy people.

When I was growing up, I never knew my dad. One day, just once, I met him...But nobody told me he was my dad. We talked for a few minutes.. but that was all.

A couple years later, I got a letter from him. He had seen a picture of you...and said "She's pretty..and looks like her grandpa."

I wrote him back, but I was told that he was sick...and went to sleep, and never woke up.

I was sad to hear this, but I was happy that I got a letter from my dad.

I love you. and I hope you love me too... If you get a picture of yourself for me, your mother has my address.
