Eluding Danger (Chapter 2)
|
"The chosen one?" I repeated in awe. "Now, what exactly do you mean by that?" I wasn't exactly ready to trust this strange man, but he seemed to be doing everything in his power to make me do so.
"Elizabeth, when you were born, you were almost like every other normal child," he explained. When our agents saw you, they were immediately entranced by your.......Well, how to put it? The best word to use would probably be .....amazing. You were advancing intellectually at a much faster pace than the other children at the hospital, and you seemed to fit the description for the child we were looking for."
"But what do I have to do?" I asked, still puzzled. "You know, it isn't normal to just grab girls off the street and tell them that they're needed by the FBI!" As hard as I was trying to stay defiant, the harder it got. I was actually beginning to trust this man, whoever he was.
"I know it isn't normal," he explained, "but neither are you. You were discovered by us when an anonymous caller informed us that you might be a very valuable child. How she knew about our mission, no one knows, but we are very glad she called us in."
"Well, I'm not!" I shouted. I was getting frustrated with the lack of information he was telling me. "If it wasn't for whoever it was who called in, I could be a happy girl living on the streets! I could be living a life without responsibility!"
"Why are you shouting at me?" the strange man yelled. "I'm trying to help you, but you're being too stubborn to listen!"
"I'm yelling because I'm really angry! Why won't you tell me more about what I'm supposed to do?" I asked in a very loud tone. I was filleed with rage, but I calmed down when I saw the look of frustration on the man's face. He seemed to be on the verge of a mental breakdown.
"I truely am sorry, but I can't tell you!" he explained in a very distressed voice. "You need to remember that I'm not really with the FBI anymore! They only information they gave me is what I've already told you, and this is the last mission they're allowing me to do! I can't screw this one up because I might still have a shot at getting my job and life back! Please, just trust me."
I pondered over what he had said. After a while, I replied. "OK, I trust you."
"Good," he said, sounding very relieved. "Now, pack up your things. We're going to the headquarters."
