"Wait, where's Joey? Oh man I hope Mr. Brown didn't take him to the office." I said as I took off for the school. Quinn and I ran into the school. I rounded the corner and saw Joey sitting in the office and Mr. Brown talking to Mrs. Newman. I peeked in the door. “Joey, Did Brown drag you in here?” I whispered. “Miss Brady.” ‘Crap Brown had me.’ I thought “Emily, wait…” Mrs. Newman said as she reached out and laid her hand on my shoulder. “Will you come into my office please?” “I have to get to class.” “I’ll give you a pass don’t worry. I just want to talk to you.” She said as she led me into her dimly lit office. I felt so claustrophobic. Her office was so small. “Erica, I need you to tell me the truth about that black eye.” “I… I can’t do that.” “Why not?” “Because it was a mistake.” “Yes, but it shouldn’t go unpunished. Did Joey hit you?” I let my head hang. “Yes.” I said quietly. “Please tell me what happened.” “Well it was after the dance on Saturday and instead of going to after prom we went to my friend Quinn’s party. Everyone was drinking and so was Joey…” “Were you?” “No, I told Joey that if he was drinking I wasn’t because I was going to drive home.” “Well see not everyone was drinking.” “Later, in the night Joey came and took me from the dance floor for a make out session. It was starting to get uncomfortable, so I told Joey I wanted to stop. He said I was being a tease and forced me against the door. I pushed him back and that’s when the fight started. He threw me on the bed and started to undress me, I kicked and punched him and I was able to get up. I was almost to the door when he tackled me. He pinned me by sitting on top of me to where I couldn’t breathe and he hit me, once, twice, three times, again, and again. I had no defense. All I could do was cry and when I cried he stopped and left. I had just spilled the whole story to my vice principal and she came over and gave me a hug. “He didn’t mean to do it. I know him, he wouldn’t hurt a fly on purpose.” I began to defend him again. “Erica, I’m sorry but I’m going to have to call your parents and the authorities.” “No! You can’t do that.” I screamed and jumped out of my chair. I stormed out of her office. “Erica, how did it go?” Mr. Brown asked. “Stay the fuck away from me and my family from now on. You don’t know what you’ve done!” I shrieked at him. “I was only trying to help. Adam asked me to look after you.” He yelled after me as I headed toward the door. “You’re not my brother; I don’t need you to look after me. I can take care of this myself.” I said as I spun on my heel to face him. “By the looks of that eye, obviously not.” He stated bluntly. The comment angered me to the point where I reached up and slapped him. “Don’t ever talk to me like that again, ever!” I turned and ran out into the hall. I went out to my car and got in. ‘Who is he to tell me I can’t take care of myself.’ I thought as I pulled out of the parking lot.
