The Day Sara Lost Everything: Chapter 16

“Oh my God, Oh my God, Oh my God,” thought Sara to herself, “What should I do?”

She ran into the kitchen and told Anthony that her father was at the door.

“Anthony, how could he find me here? No one I know knows about you! I didn’t even know I was coming here until I met you!”

“Relax Sara. I want you to wait at the top of the stairs. You should be able to hear and see what is happening, but I don’t want him to see you.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Teach that terrible piece of shit that it isn’t ok to treat anyone this way, especially not his daughter.”

Anthony and Sara walked towards the door together. In the foyer they hugs and spit up. Sara was sitting around the corner in such a way that she could see everything, but no one would be able to see her. Betty, was standing right behind her, a hand on her shoulder.

He opened the door, ready to knock this guy’s lights out. But when he saw his father’s best friend Jim Foster standing on the stoop, he unclenched his fist, and held his hand out. The two men shook hands, and Anthony invited him inside.

“Jim, how nice to see you. Its been a very long time. I believe the last time I spoke to you was what? Ten years ago at my father’s funeral? How’s your little girl doing?”

Anthony was very confused. Sara must have mistaken Jim for someone else. He had know Jim Foster for years. He wasn’t a alcoholic rapist or lunatic that Sara described her father as.

“Well, actually she’s the reason I’m here. You see I had to be in the hospital for a couple of days and when I got home yesterday she wasn’t there. I’m not sure what happened to her. I know that most evenings you go for a walk through town and I was just wondering if you happened to see her.”

“Can you describe her to me?”

“She has long black hair that gets a blue sheen to it in the light, an athletic body, vibrant green eyes, and cutters marks on her wrist.”

Anthony thought to himself, “Don’t be ridiculous. He’s not talking about Sara. There are many girls who could fit that description its just a coincidence.”

“Well, I insist that you stay for lunch. I’m afraid Betty’s out for the day so we’ll have to make due.”

“Well, I am a little famished,” said Jim as he patted his beer belly.

The two men walked into the kitchen, and Anthony hurriedly put the plates in the sink.

Betty spun Sara around, “Listen to me Sara. Anthony doesn’t believe he’s your father and it needs to stay that way. If he thinks it is so many bad things will happen. Do not let him see your wrist and whatever you do don’t tell him your last name. Do you understand?

“I understand what you saying, but I don’t get why.”

“Honestly, I hope you never find out. It will make things much more complicated than they need to be. If Anthony asks, I was never here today.”

“But…” before Sara could finish her sentence, Betty was already down the hallway. Sara decided to eavesdrop.

She walked down the stairs carefully thankful that they didn’t squeak. As she tiptoed through the living area she stood right outside the doorway catching scattered pieces of conversation that made absolutely no sense to her.

“So Jim…..daughters name?”

“……Sara.”
