How Sir Dwight became a Knight

How Sir Dwight became a Knight

Short Created on 5-29-07 Views(162) Story Rating G

Tales of old were told at night,

So gather round the firelight,

As I spin a tale of wondrous fights,

Battles that would curl your hair with fright,

Let me now for you recite:

Once upon a time in the land of Avonlite,

There lived a homely young man named Dwight,

The apprentice of a wheelwright,

Who wished one day to become a knight.

The people mocked him whenever he came into sight,

They said, “oh look, sir Dwight has come to set things right”

Yet though they laughed and were impolite,

Young Dwight practiced with his sword every twilight.

Then one-day evil came to the land of Avonlite,

A dragon scorching the land with his breathe while in flight,

Swallowing cattle and sheep in one monstrous bite!

The people cried in panic and fright;

“we need a knight, we need a knight!”

But no one came forward to save the town from its plight,

Until finally young Dwight stepped up to his full height,

And declared in a voice full of might,

“I shall set out forthright and find this dragon and then him smite!”

He climbed up a mountain and to his delight,

Found the lair of the dragon he wished to requite.

There he waited a whole day and night,

Until the dragon returned from its flight,

There the battle began on the mountain’s height.

The dragon hurled breath of fire bright,

But quick and nimble was young Dwight,

The dragon turned on him again with spite,

But Dwight fought on with all his might,

Back and forth they waged in fight,

Over and over sword and scales unite,

Blood spattered left and right,

And they were still there at morning light,

For the battle had raged all through the night.

Yet young Dwight kept up the fight,

Until at last, tired and slight,

He gave one final thrust of might,

Which pierced the dragon and did him smite,

And it burst into a burning ball of light,

And fell to the valley below like a meteorite.

The people cheered and were quite contrite,

And when the King heard of the fight,

He called for young Dwight,

And to the world outright,

The King proclaimed him a knight,

And that is the story of Sir Dwight.
