It took me an hour to get out of bed. When I did, I got dressed and ran out of the door. It was dark outside so I ran; I didn’t want to run into anyone.

“Kiki!” Someone was yelling behind me. “Kiki, hold up!”

I kept going though. Suddenly I felt a hand slip over my shoulder.

“Ahhhhhh!!!!” I screamed.

“Whoa! Hold up… what’s wrong?” Shugg asked.

I didn’t say anything.

He looked at me a little bit more carefully and his eyes grew wide. “Yo! What the fuck happened to your face?”

I started crying and he pulled me close. “What happened?” He said a little calmer.

I shook me head No. I couldn’t tell him what he had done to me.

“Just tell me one thing… did you go home?” He asked looking me in the eyes.

I sniffed and looked away from him. I guess, by me not answering I had answered.

He started nodding his head. “I’m gon kill ‘em. I’m gon fuckin KILL HIM!”

He grabbed my hand and we started walking back to my apartment.

“No! No Shugg I don’t wanna go back there!”

He looked back at me. “You can wait in the hallway or something but I’m not leavin’ you by yo self.”

We got back to my apartment complex and I froze. “I’ll wait here…” I said.

I was shaking and my whole body was sore, but I’d rather stand out here than have to go back in that building.

“No… come in the hallway, just wait outside the door.” He said. “Trust me… you gon be fine.”

I reluctantly followed. Shugg banged on the door and as soon as it opened he grabbed Tony by the throat and they flew into the wall. Tony wasn’t expecting this so it gave Shugg an advantage.

“You fuckin nasty ass punk ass nigga! Who da fuck you think you is?” Shugg punched Tony in the face and the blood from his lip traced the wall.

Tony was trying to fight back but Shugg just kept coming back at him with more blows.

“You think you tough? Huh? You do?” He started kicking him now.

Tony let out a loud noise that made me jump. I wasn’t watching but I knew who was doing the most damage.

Shugg kept kicking Tony and when I peaked in Tony wasn’t even moving. “Oh my God! You’re gonna kill him!” I ran up and stopped Shugg from kicking him anymore.

“Fuck him!” He kicked him again. “Touch her again and I’ll really send you to yo fuckin grave!” Shugg yelled as I pulled him out of the apartment.

We ran down the steps and tried to get away from the scene. I wasn’t about to call 911, I figured my mom would be home soon to deal with it.

We got as far as the back alley when I broke down again. This was not on my agenda for the summer.

Shugg was breathing heavily but still managed to pull me close and console me.

“I want it all to just STOP!” I said into his shoulder. “I hate it here! I hate the hood!”

He held me tighter. “Kiki I know you don’t wanna hear it but, this kinda shit don’t just happen in the hood. But this is your home reguardless though. Your family and friends and here, too.” He pulled away and looked me in the eyes. “You may hate the hood today but remember you love it too. This is where you from baby girl. You could never hate that.”

I didn’t say anything more on the subject. What he didn’t know was that I really did hate this place. Yeah I’ve had my share of laughs here but there’s nothing left to laugh about after tonight. No matter what he said, I was determined to break free.

“You hungry?” He asked as we made our way out of the alley.

I shook my head no. “I want a shower.”

“Danny’s place?”

“Yeah.”

We made our way to Danny’s apartment complex and when we got there Shugg insisted on walking me up and even staying longer after we had gotten there. I went to go take a shower and had nothing else on my mind.

“Damn Shugg… what’s with all that blood on your sleeve?” Danny asked.

Shugg shook his head. “Nothin’. Just some lame ass nigga tried to come at me so I had to handle my business.”

Danny looked at him with doubtful eyes. The way he had said that made it seem like there was more to the story.

“Oh…” She didn’t take her eyes off him though.

There was something about his presence in general that was just off. He looked like he was deep in thought and he was barely even blinking.

“Shugg… you aight?”

“I’m straight.” He said not even making eye contact.

Danny got up and went into the kitchen. “You want some Kool-Aid?”

“Nah, I’m good danny.”

Now she knew something was up. He was refusing suger?

She went back into the living room and stood right in front of him. “Nigga you betta start talkin’ and I mean start talkin’ right now!”

He looked at her like she had just lost her mind. “Yo what the fuck is up?”

“You! You been in a whole notha world since you stepped through the door! I wanna know why cuz its somethin yall not tell me!”

“Man… I don’t know what the fuck you talkin about. I’m out!”

Shugg got up and headed for the door. “Yeah whateva. But I know it’s something. We posed to be like blood shugg!” She yelled before he walked out the door.

When Shugg got outside he couldn’t help but feel guilty. It was true that him and danny was close, but the bond between him and Kiki was just closer. He wouldn’t tell danny something that wasn’t even his choice to tell in the first place. He wouldn’t do it.

On the way down the steps he sent his crew a text message. “Meet me at the spot. Dat nigga Jojo gets handled tonight!”
