My mother curled up in bed with me and she looked me in the eyes. I resembled my mother a lot. I had her lips and her nose. I even had the same color hair as her. But, I didn’t have her eyes. My eyes were what made me different. I remember being a little girl and always looking at family pictures of my family members… none of them had my eyes.
My mother took a hand a swept it over my hair and she smiled. I didn’t see a reason for her to smiling though, I was still shaking a little and I was still scared.
“I know you have a lot of questions for me Zyla… but… I don’t have the answers. I cant tell you what I know, but there’s a lot that I don’t.” She said still looking me in the eyes.
I nodded absently.
“I met Jarrell at a club me and my friends were at one night.” She started. “He was so normal… well as normal as normal gets.”
“What do you mean, normal?” I asked curious.
“He… I guess he didn’t give me a reason to think he was… different.” When she said that last word I felt the hairs on my skin rise.
I didn’t say anything. I wanted to hear the rest of the story.
“Anyway, I liked him.” She said with a smile. “We danced and we just had fun. I was only 19 and having fun was certainly at the top of my agenda. I asked him about himself and he told me all that I wanted to hear… Only leaving out one detail.”
She stopped and looked away. “What detail?” I asked.
She sat up and I could tell she was contemplating telling me so I repeated myself. “What detail mom?”
She ignored me. “As time went on, I fell in love with him. He was so mysterious but that only made me love him more. He kept asking me did I love him enough to leave the world behind…. I always said yes but I didn’t really know what he meant by it. I thought it was just a romantic thing.”
“And it wasn’t?” I asked.
She shook her head no. “I got pregnant after a while and I remember I was going on my eight month when he told me his secret.” She looked back at me. “He told me he was a vampire…”
My eyes popped out of my head. What? I asked myself in my head. I couldn’t speak so that’s as close as I got t asking her a question.
“He told me that the baby I was carrying was important to him and to everyone else.” She said. “I was so scared that I left. I told him I didn’t know what kind of game he was trying to play but I was out. After I left he followed me everywhere; he didn’t want to leave me alone.”
“So… what happened?”
“He told me I had to make a decision. Either I would join him, or my baby would.” She looked away. “I didn’t know what he meant by that but I was young and scared and I would have agreed to anything just to get him to leave me alone. He told me he’d be seeing me again… In eighteen years.”
I was quiet. I was really only understanding two things. One: I was the daughter of some freak show vampire. And two: I was expected to join him. The main thing I didn’t understand was why.
I had questions and it was apparent from the story that my mother had no answers.
“So that’s it? You just gambled me off before I was even born?” I said angrily.
“What was I supposed to do Zyla? I was young and scared.” She said raising her voice. “I didn’t think he would really come back after that long.”
“Well you thought wrong!” I yelled. “He’s here and he’s in my head!”
I heard clapping coming from the doorway of my room and me and my mother both turned towards it. “Very good Zyla.”
It was the same voice from my head only now it had a face and a body to match. He even had my eyes; the eyes that always had me curious. Those beautiful green eyes were so mesmerizing. Though I looked nothing like him, I saw myself in him.
“How did you get in here?” My mother said with a shaking voice.
He laughed. “Oh but don’t you remember? You invited me in…”
My mother grabbed me tighter than she had already been grabbing me. I was too caught up with those eyes.
“That was a long time ago!” My mother yelled.
My father- Jarrell- Shrugged. “Doesn’t matter. If you didn’t want me to come in you should have changed you living arrangements around a bit.” He laughed again.
I was frozen. My mother shook me frantically. “Sweetie… tell him! Tell him you don’t want to be with him!” My mother yelled.
Jarrell stepped closer to my bedside and I still couldn’t move or talk.
“It’s not her decision!” He snapped.
“The hell it isn’t!” My mother yelled getting up and stepping in front of me. “You can’t just take her away Jarrell. She’s not like you!”
“That’s what you think.” He stepped closer to my mother and grabbed her into his arms. I thought he was trying to hurt her but instead he placed his lips to hers. She didn’t put up a fight… she wanted it.
I backed away from the scene as far as I could until I was against the headboard of the bed and couldn’t move anymore.
She tore her lips away from his. “Stop it!” She said sitting back down on the bed.
“She’s mine.” He said. “It’s my blood that pumps through her veins!”
“As well as mine.” My mother said.
“Bullshit.” He said plainly.
My mother shot him a hatred look. “You will not take my child away from me!”
“Even if that child is a vampire?” I said in a whisper.
They both looked at me. My mother shot off the bed and backed away. My skin was as pale as it could get and my fangs were showing.
“Oh my God! What did you do to her?” My mother said to Jarrell.
He smiled. “Nothing. Time did this to her, she’s eighteen now. She’s always been half vampire… and now…” He held his hand out to me and I slowly accepted it.
“It’s nice to see you Zyla.” He said looking at me.
I nodded. “And it’s nice to see you daddy.” Did- Did I just say that?
He grabbed my arm and I automatically felt a burning. I winced but he didn’t let go. Everything went black.
