Matt was actually starting to like the soup kitchen a little bit. The people were nice and easy to talk to. The atmosphere was great. The grateful customers were talking and laughing and didn’t seem a bit worried about the rest of their lives while they were there. So Matt was actually both relieved and a little sad that this was his last night to volunteer.
When he got there, the head server Hattie told him that they were going to close the soup kitchen, because they didn’t have enough money to keep it open. Matt felt a twinge of guilt about this. He just couldn’t stand by and let this happen.
During the next few weeks, he couldn’t get the soup kitchen out of his mind. He went through the same routine every day. He would get up, take care of Rupert, call Gretta, who was happy to oblige, and then he would sell as many magazines as he could.
There were only fifteen magazines left. He was so close, but no one seemed to want them. There were four home magazines, six garden magazines, two mechanic magazines, and three gossip magazines left. He asked Gretta if she was interested in buying any, and it turned out she bought all his garden magazines. He decided to buy the two mechanic magazines and one gossip magazine. But that still left six. Since there was nobody in New York that was interested, he decided to go over to New Jersey and sell there. Surprisingly enough, the people were a lot nicer there.
Matt had done it. He had sold all his magazines. He rushed home to call Louise. She put him in touch with upper management. He spoke with a man named Gary Foster. He had an accent that sounded very much like a Texan. He was very pleased that Matt had sold all 100 magazines within a month. Matt asked about a possible promotion and Gary said, “Listen kid, I’ll tell you what. Since you’re so fast with those magazines, I’m going to put a couple of people under you. You’ll get your regular pay, plus a percentage of theirs. Now how does that sound Matt?”
“That sounds great Mr. Foster. Thank you very much. You don’t know how much this means to me.”
“You’re welcome kid. I’ll just have Louise give you the information.”
After talking to Louise, he hung up the phone. He couldn’t believe it. It was done. He had sold his magazines, gotten a promotion, completed his volunteer hours, and taken care of Rupert (aside from him getting stolen, but Matt had found him and made sure that wouldn’t happen again).
Excitedly, Matt called Mr. Hinkerhoff and told him what he’d done. Mr. Hinkerhoff told him that that was great and he’d be over tomorrow morning to check on him.
