Everett was laughing hysterically. He had done it. He had Matt’s chance at the money and he had twenty million dollars panting in the backseat. He had waited outside Matt’s house for the last few days, just waiting for his chance when he was sure of Matt’s whereabouts and how long it would take him to get back. He had accumulated three hundred dollars in parking tickets to prove it. But it was worth it. Everything was worth it. “Who’s the imbecile now my dear cousin?”
Of course Everett wasn’t going to keep him at his house. He wasn’t stupid contrary to Matt’s angry shouts. No, he was taking Rupert to his private yacht on the Hudson Bay. It was only a few miles away from his house. Matt would never find him there.
As soon as Everett got to the dock, he found his mother’s car right beside it. He was so shocked the only thing he could say was, “Oh no.” He parked the car and went onto the yacht. The second his mother saw him she started nagging at him.
“When are you going to clean this place up? I didn’t buy you this so you could turn it into a pigsty you know. Anyway I just came by to pick up my-”
All of a sudden there were three short barks.
“What in world was that?”
“Nothing it was probably just someone playing with their dog.” Everett replied hastily.
“Well if they’re this close, then I’m going to go tell them to control their animal.” She said. Before he could stop her, she marched right outside and gasped. “What in the name of Hudson is Rupert doing in your car? I thought Matt was supposed to take care of him for the inheritance.”
“Well I…ummm.” He stammered.
“Everett Charles Green! Did you steal that dog from Matt?” she yelled. “I am taking this dog with me, and when I get back you’re going to wish I’d turned you in to the authorities, because now you’re going to have to deal with me!”
Everett could only stand there hopelessly as his mother drove away with his chance at twenty million dollars. I better get out of town before she comes back, he thought. He got in his car and drove. He didn’t care where or how long it took him to get there, just as long as it put distance between them.
