The next morning his magazines came, along with an instruction guide to selling them. He glanced at it, and then threw it aside. How hard could it be anyway? He made sure Rupert had plenty of food and water to tide him over, and he set out with twenty magazines.
The first house he came to, the man immediately slammed the door in his face as soon as he saw the magazines. He didn’t even get a word out. With dismay, he found out that this was a pattern as he went to other houses.
Determined to sell these magazines, he came up with a new tactic. He hid them behind his back and started a light conversation with his next customer. She was an old lady with wiry, gray hair, and introduced herself as Beatrice Dover. He found out that this way, he could actually sell them. She bought three gardening magazines. Other people bought mechanic, home, and gossip magazines. If Matt felt his potential customers slipping away from the small talk, he would tell them his story and get the sympathy factor.
Matt was on a roll. He sold every one of his magazines, and maybe if he sold all of them quickly he would get his promotion. He was feeling so good that he didn’t even return home. He just went straight to the soup kitchen to get in some extra hours. Matt was still in a good mood when he came home. This happy feeling ended as soon as he got to his door. It was wide open.
