There were plenty of reasons for Matt not to like Rupert. He was big, smelly, he shed a lot, and he was always a little bit jealous of him, because his father had always treated Rupert like the son he wish he had. “Come on Rupert.”
When he got home, he scanned the newspaper for help wanted ads. There were several. There was one at a pet shop, but he didn’t need to deal with anymore animals. There was also one at Shop Smart, but that was a dead end job. He needed something that was easy, fun, and one that he could get a promotion quickly. Then he saw it. There was an opening as a salesman for magazines. “Well that’s easy, people friendly, and I’ll get a promotion in no time.”
He called the number and asked about the job. He talked to a woman named Louise. She asked if he had any people skills. He told her he was great with people. This was only half true. He thought he was great with people. Other people didn’t think so. He gave her his name, address, and phone number. Louise told him 100 magazines of various types would be sent to his address within a week.
With the job taken care of, he gave Rupert a bath, fed him, and brushed him. None of these were easy. Rupert splashed water everywhere, got food all over the floor, and wouldn’t stay still long enough to be brushed.
After all this was done, Matt decided to go down to the soup kitchen for some volunteer hours. He didn’t really want to, but he couldn’t think of anything else to volunteer for. He served dinner for three grueling hours.
Satisfied with this, he headed home for his own dinner. He continued to do this every night for five days, determined to get the volunteering over with. Besides, he thought to himself, once this was over he’d never have to work or volunteer again.
