Green Monster Part 1

Anyone who met Matt Green knew at once that he was self-absorbed and immature.
He and his father had had a mediocre relationship. They didn’t spend much quality time together, but it wasn’t like they had hated one another. They just didn’t see eye to eye.
Now Matt’s chance to repair the damages between them was over. His father was dead, and now Matt waited anxiously as his father’s attorney prepared to read his will. He glanced quickly at his snooty cousin Everett. They had always had a rivalry between them. Everett had always kissed up to his Uncle Mark, and Matt hated him for it.
There was twenty million dollars at stake here. Not something to be taken lightly. Because his father was a millionaire, Matt was of course, naturally spoiled. He didn’t want to seem heartless in light of his father’s death, but he wanted that money more than anything.
The attorney, a Mr. Bryce Hinkerhoff cleared his throat and began to read the will.
“This is the last will and testament of Mark James Green. All my money shall go to my only son Matt. He will receive all twenty million dollars if he completes three tasks. I am sure these will help him in many ways. Should he fail, the money will go to my nephew Everett.
For the first task, Matt must care for my dog Rupert, who was more than a dog. He was my pride and joy. This will make him more responsible. For the second task, he must get a steady job and receive at least one promotion. This will make him a hard worker. For the final task, he must complete a full twenty hours of volunteer work. This I’m sure will make him more caring for those less fortunate than him. Matt must prove to my attorney Mr. Hinkerhoff that he is responsible, a hard worker, caring, and an all around good person that I’ve always hoped he’d turn into. Once he has done all this, he will be ready to handle the money, and he shall receive it in full.”
Matt could only sit there in disbelief. He thought about all those things his father had required of him to get the money. He was a good person! How could he do this to him? But as much as he didn’t want to do all these tasks, he could not and would not let the money go to Everett. Not even a cent. So even though he hated Rupert and had never worked a day in his life, much less volunteered, he was going to suck it up and do it.
Everett looked as if he’d been slapped in the face. After a moment, he regained his composure. “Well of course he’ll never be able to do it. I’ll have the money in no time at all.” Everett snickered. He made a silent promise to himself to sabotage his arrogant cousin anyway he could.
All of a sudden Matt blew up on him. “Yes I will. I’ll do it, and you’ll never see a cent you pompous imbecile.”
Matt stormed out of the room and started heading home when he remembered about Rupert. He went to Rupert’s room to gather his things and bring him to his house. After the trainer gave him some last minute advice, he gave a low whistle to call Rupert, his father’s beloved Saint Bernard.
