Prologue
I had the strange feeling that day wasn’t going to end well as soon as I awoke. It was my birthday, I had just turned nineteen. My father was telling me it was time I started concentrating on taking over his business. My mother was in the kitchen helping the servants prepare breakfast. She was a famous chef back in the states. I walked through the house slowly taking in everything my family was doing. My sister was preparing herself for the day in the mirror. She was beautiful. She was to be married in a few weeks; so this was going to be our last vacation together. No one was mentioning that though. We had all seen my mother cry too much over it.
We left the house after we finished breakfast. We went into the busy market district of Madrid. I was not interested in all the shiny things there, unlike my sister. She picked up anything and everything that caught her eye. I was glad to just enjoy the little time I had left with my family. I had the feeling we were being followed. It felt almost as if we were being stalked. We went to lunch for a nice family meal.
Everyone told me happy birthday on the way to eat.
We ordered and waited patiently talking among one another. “Is everyone having a good time?” my mother asked.
“I’m having the time of my life.” my sister replied.
“How about you, Razen?” my father questioned eyeing me suspiciously. He obviously noticed how quite I had been today.
“I’m fine.” I responded with a smile. I didn’t want to mention the feelings I had been having all day. It wouldn’t do much even if I did except cause unnecessary paranoia. I could do that alone. The feeling of being followed had now subsided to just being watched. I glanced around I did not see anyone staring or even looking in our direction. We ate in silence not wanting to disrespect anyone by talking with food in our mouths.
We soon left once our meal was over. We went to the beach and sat there watching the tide roll in. It was my father’s idea to stay the night there. I watched the sun set and the moon rise never moving from my one sitting position in the sand. I watched the rest of my family walk up and down the beach laughing and smiling to one another. I had too much on my mind to enjoy the moment, but the relaxing sound of the tide rolling in helped soothe my mind. I loved my family dearly, but for some reason I couldn’t relate to them. I was pale the way they were dark. I had black hair and they had blonde or brown. Even my name Razen was different from theirs or the traditional American names. I’ve searched for it in all the libraries I’ve been in. I could never find it though.
I watched my family one by one go to sleep. My father was the last to fall asleep. He was waiting on me, but lately I hadn’t been sleeping well. My family didn’t know that. I wouldn’t want to put extra stress on them than what was necessary. The feeling of being watched started to come back, but it was different this time. I felt someone or something approaching. I felt my heartbeat start to speed, but not from fear but from excitement. I glanced around seeing blackness all around me.
My eyes had adjusted to the light a long time ago, but for some reason it felt like my vision had been shrouded by some sort of black mist. Then, all the noises from the ocean faded and it was as if I went deaf and blind. I was afraid to scream, it may just be a dream I told myself. Then, I felt something wrap itself around my chest. I tried to scream and shake it off, but as soon as my mouth opened all the air was instantly forced out of my lungs by the pressure around my chest. It started tightening. I could not breathe, the veil finally lifted from my eyes. My eyes instantly started taking in everything around me. I saw nothing but my family’s dead bodies sprawled out. I twisted my neck around to see a small female. She was gorgeous, but I knew instantly that she was not human. She was the size of my sister. So there was no way she could hold me with this much strength. I struggled but it was as if I wasn’t even trying. I saw the blood dripping from her lips.
“Are you going to be good if I remove some of the pressure?” she asked tauntingly. I nodded my head. I felt the pressure ease up a little.
“What the hell are you? What did you do to my family?” I questioned furiously. I was so angered by the sight of my family that I forgot completely about my fear.
“I killed them,” she said in a slightly pleased way “It was quite easy.”
“Why haven’t you killed me then?” I asked in an almost begging way. “I am no better than they are.” I informed her.
“You see child that is where your wrong.” she said. “You are much better. Haven’t you ever wondered why you are so different from your family? You have vampire blood running through your veins. I don’t understand how your still mostly human though, but I’m going to change that.” she replied with a smile. Before I could even think of a way to reply I felt her teeth sink into my skin. I felt a terrible pain run through my whole body. I felt like I was on fire, but I wasn’t going to give her the satisfaction of hearing me cry out in agony. I felt the pain start to stop and I felt myself slipping back into the blackness but this time it was shrouding my mind too. I slowly slipped into an unconscious state giving in to the nothingness. I awoke from what seemed like fifteen minutes in a new setting that I didn’t recognize.
I glanced around and locked eyes with the same female that killed my family. “Where am I?” I demanded to know. I took my eyes off of her and taking in how detailed everything was. She still hadn’t answered me, but yet she kept staring at me with a look of disbelief. “What? Why are you looking at me like that?” I asked in a more calm state this time.
She chose to answer this. “I don’t understand how you’re awake so quickly. It takes most people three to seven days for the change to be complete. And yet it only took you part of a night and most of a day. So basically one day. Your progress is amazing. I can not believe it.” she informed me.
“What do you mean change? What have you done to me? Where am I? Who are you?” I bombarded her with questions.
“I turned you into a complete vampire now your whole being does your blood justice. You are a vampire, an undead, and etcetera. I changed you. And I’m glad I did. It would have been a waste to kill such an amazing person. You are at my home. This is where my coven lives there are twenty of us total but usually only four stay here at one time. We don’t want to draw to much attention to ourselves. You must be extremely thirsty? Oh, and my name is Alexandra, but you can call me Alex” Alex said.
I had not noticed the burning in my throat till she mentioned my thirst. “I am parched. My throat feels like I just swallowed a gallon of sand. Do I drink blood also?” I asked shuttering at the thought.
“Of course, we should hunt for our meal tonight. Follow me.” she stood and walked toward the window. She opened it to expose a cliff overlooking the beach. I saw the tree where my family’s bodies laid under last night. I saw her step on the window sill. She turned and smiled at me, and then she jumped. I darted to the window. She vanished from view. I noticed then that I could see everything. I could see the ants crawling in the tree a hundred yards away and that was without even trying. Alex dropped from the roof and landed right in front of me.
“Are you coming?” she asked in a bored tone. “Just do as I do, but watch out as a newborn you are about twice as powerful as me.” she said in a nervous tone. I picked up on her anxiety as soon as she did. She turned quickly and jumped out of view of a normal person. I leaped to the roof and quickly followed her.
I was surprised at how graceful and quite I was. I was always graceful and agile as a human, but now I had become about a million more times aware of myself and my senses. I kept up with Alex easily even when she tried to run at full speed. When we reached the other side of Spain it was getting dark. She spotted our targets it was a family. They were all laughing and having a good time in each others company.
We followed them home. We waited for the lights to go off. We silently approached the house. She slipped into the front as I entered the back. I froze unsure of my actions. I wasn’t a killer, not even close. I heard screams that could only come from the nothingness they were experiencing. One by one I heard the screams fall silent. I ran upstairs with the feeling to protect them. I entered the youngest daughter’s room. I saw her, huddled in the corner. Alex was prowling towards her in a predator’s stance. I grabbed her and slammed her against the wall. I threw her through the wall, and sent her barreling into the ground. The child screams stopped, and I had barely even noticed. I glanced at her. She was staring at me in amazement.
I jumped toward Alex, and landed right in front of her. I grabbed her by the throat, and held her off the ground. “Why?” I demanded.
“It’s how we live. If we don’t feed we will shrivel up. And eventually we will become to weak to feed or even be fed.” she chocked out.
“You will not feed again.” I growled. I started crushing her throat. I slammed her into the ground. I heard her spine snap. I sank my fangs into her throat, and ripped her head off. Something told me I had to destroy the body. I took it into the woods and built a pyre. I tossed the body onto the fire, and watched it burn. I sat there the whole night wondering what I was going to do. I saw a bear go stalking by. I felt the burn rise up in my throat as I took in the animals scent.
My thirst took over and I lunged for the bear. I grabbed it and flipped the animal onto its back. It roared in surprise. I had my teeth in the bear’s throat before it could react further. I drained it dry. The burning in my throat subsided in to a prickle.
I knew that her coven would have to be coming to avenge her. I fled Spain and boarded a ship to the states. I traveled the country looking for the first coven that believed that humans should be protected
I finally came across one in Detroit, Michigan. I joined them and instantly connected with them. They were a mixed coven of vampires, werewolves, and shape shifters. I told them my story, and they took me in with open arms.
