"Ouch..." Nessa moaned, shaking her long fingers out to stop the throbbing in her hand. She was a madwoman with a pen. She had been scribbling down song lyrics and poems all afternoon and it was starting to take a toll on the strength & endurance of her hands.
She sighed and leaned back against the willow tree. A heavy gust of wind blew over the lake down the hill, sending blue waves rising up above the water in delicate ripples. A smile crossed her face; the edge of her lip meeting the line of freckles that dotted her cheeks. She pulled her long strawberry blond hair up over her shoulder and began to write again. A sonnet about the bliss of summer in a sad attempt to conform to trochee.
As I lie in perfect wonder, thinking
To myself of life and where I should be
Maybe with the birds, soaring and singing
Out with passion; notes that force eyes to see
To see what? Nessa thought to herself. She growled and chucked the notebook down on the grass. This is too friggin' hard, I like free verse, she decided, letting her stubborn ways take over.
After taking a minute to maintain her cool, she put on her headphones and lay out in the sun to work on her tan.
It was mid-July, and Nessa had already seen a few more freckles appear on her oranging skin. She sometimes wished her tan could look prettier, but hey, there was no way of changing it, so she might as well live with it.
Quietdrive resounded through her head their cover of "Time After Time" and Nessa hummed along, letting herself get lost in the music and the ripples touching the sandy shore of the lake.
Suddenly the roaring of a speedboat filled her ears. She tore off her headphones and sat up to inspect the noise.
A group of shirtless guys rode on the boat while 2 others shouted in extacy as they hopped across the water in their tubes.
Nessa shook her head and smirked. She tried to settle back into the song, but one of the boys in the tube glanced her way and she lost all previous memory.
He had long, shaggy brown hair, and perfect ivory skin. He shook his hair out of his eyes and revealed an abyss of chocolate in his irises. He hollered something to his friends and laughing, they pulled him aboard the boat. Nessa cocked her head to the side as the boat sped toward her. The boy kept his eyes on her with an unreadable look. She saw him say something to the blond boy, and he was shoved off the boat into the lake. He kicked his lanky legs up, splashing water at the blond boy, then dipped under the water and swam all the way up to the shore.
Nessa's pulse started to pound as she realized what was going on.
She crossed her legs and adjusted her bikini top. The boys on the boat whistled and she flipped them off, smiling sarcastically. They "oohed" and pushed each other around.
Dorks...she mumbled to herself.
The brown haired boy pulled himself out of the water and yelled to her, "You look lonely! Wanna tube with us?"
Nessa held back a grin, and tucked her hair behind her ear instead.
"Why would I do that?" she asked calmly.
"Because I'm gorgeous and you want me," he joked. Nessa tilted her head back and laughed, a true laugh.
"So will you?" the boy asked.
"Of course, darling," she said in an English accent, standing up and walking down to the water.
He was even more gorgeous up close, Nessa noticed.
"Can you swim?" he asked.
"Nope," Nessa said sarcastically. "I've lived on this lake my whole life and I never really got around to learning how to swim."
"Ahh..." the boy said, smiling. "Such a shame, guess you'll only get to ride on the boat."
Nessa grinned and sank into the water and swam to the boat. The water was cool as it bubbled around her body. She popped up and pulled herself onto a tube, raising her eyebrows at the brownhaired boy as he started to climb on the same tube.
"Adam's on the other one," he explained.
Nessa nodded. "What's your name?"
"Chase," he said, seating himself behind her. "Yours?"
"Vanessa," she answered. "But I like Nessa."
"Cool, cool." Chase pointed to each of the boys on the boat. "The ugly one driving is Cory." Nessa supressed laughing. "The blond one is Seb, and the short one is Erica. Oh, I mean ERIC."
Nessa laughed.
"Are y'all ready?!" Cory screamed in a horrible impression of a southern accent.
"Hell yeah!" Chase yelled back. "Hold on, Cory's mean on the speed," he warned to Nessa. He grabbed her waist, in a brotherly way, but nonetheless Nessa's skin tingled. She gripped the handles of the tube tightly.
The engine revved and then the tubes were skimming the top of the lake, wind rushing by at a deafening speed. Then they were thrown to the side by Cory pulling a quick turn. Nessa screamed in joy and clung even tighter to the tube as they whiplashed across the lake. Cory drove back where the waves from the boat had started to grow higher and forced the boat to 70 mph.
The tube bounced on about 3 of the waves, but as Cory shifted directions again, the tube tilted over. Chase screamed, "Abandon ship!" and he and Nessa plunged into the water. Nessa felt her body being pounded by the huge ripples, but couldn't help smiling anyway.
She swam up to the surface and looked around for Chase. Adam was whooping; he'd survived the death curve. Then something tightened around Nessa's ankles and pulled her down under the water. She kicked and fought until the force let her go. Chase's head reached the surface just after Nessa's, and he laughed hysterically.
"You asshole!" she yelled, laughing and kicking water at him.
"Better watch out for the Loch Ness Monster, Nessa..." he said eerily. "Next time it won't be so merciful..."
