Hot Chocolate

“That was awesome!” exclaimed my best friend, Charis. “That hill rocked! We have to do this again before all the snow melts, Rob.”

I nodded as I pulled off my gloves and hat and threw them on the fireplace, Charis doing the same. We took the rest of our snow gear off and plopped down on the couch, exhausted. Charis had come over to my house after lunch four hours ago and we’d walked to the big hill that was near the end of my neighborhood and sledded for three hours straight.

Trying to warm my hands up and cool my burning face off at the same time, my eyes wandered to the small tabletop in front of us. I grabbed a photo album titled Friends & Family written in neon-aqua blue, and we looked through it together.

“Oh! I remember that one!” Charis said, shifting positions to get more comfortable and to get a better view. “That was where I called you Elephant Ears and you didn’t like it when I did that so you didn’t smile for the camera.” She smiled like she had just told the best joke.

I just rolled my eyes and shook my head. “Yep, I almost forgot. Oh, wait, no I couldn’t – you never let me!”

My mom came into the living room with three steaming mugs of hot chocolate and sat down beside Charis, handing us our mugs. We thanked her and I took a gulp – big mistake. It wasn’t just hot, it was hot. But I still liked the rich, chocolatey taste – after my burnt tongue could finally taste it.

“I remember this one,” mom said, pointing to a picture of me crouching in front of a painted boulder for our church Easter play five years ago. I was giving the camera my skeptical look. “That one’s funny, Rob.”

Charis pointed to another one. “That one has Joey, Becky, Rob and me all hugging at the zoo. I barely remember that!”

Mom nodded. “That was years ago, wasn’t it?”

I just stared into my almost-empty mug, and gave it a disgusted face. Lesson number two: never consume hot chocolate with a burnt tongue and within three minutes. Another big mistake; Charis and mom burst out laughing, freaking me out and making me jump a foot off the couch.

“Rob, you’re hilarious!” Charis laughed, putting down her mug after she’d almost spilled it on herself. Holding her stomach and squeezing her eyes closed, she gasped for breath.

I rolled my green eyes. It was only a face; what was so funny? I shrugged it off, hoping that if I let it go they’d stop. It worked; they did. We were back on the couch, mugs refilled, when I pointed to a picture of Charis. Her arms were folded narrowed brown eyes, and big frown. In the picture she was staring at me, and I was smiling into the camera like it was the happiest day of my life.

                Mom chuckled and I laughed.

She almost yelled – I could tell – but an evil smile spread across her face as she suddenly remembered something. “OK, laugh it up Fuzz Brain!”

I stopped laughing abruptly and stuck my tongue out.
