Fireworks
|
I stared at the fireworks shot off from IPFW in my folding chair on the front yard. They were wonderful, beautiful, and everything else. Blue, green, red, yellow, orange, pink, purple, and more colors flashed before my eyes, making me feel like I could sit there all night.
Without me knowing it, my best friend Robby walked up behind me and tapped my shoulders - he knows I hate it when anyone does that,
I turned around and slapped his hands away. "Robert Adam, when will you ever learn to get over yourself?" The words were out of my mouth before I could stop them.
Rob grinned - his annoying, evil, pearl-white-teeth grin. He was 5' 6", and could get over himself at least twice; which was when I realized what I had said was completely stupid to say.
"Did you get the coke I asked you to get for me?" I changed the subject and asked, while he slid into the empty folding chair beside me.
"Aren't they awesome?" I said when he handed me my coke and I popped it open.
"From the fifteen seconds I've been outside and watching them, yeah; they're cool."
We were quiet a bit, his parents and mine chattering away - almost ruining the fireworks boom effect.
"That one was cool," I said after a huge one exploded. Rob just kept staring at them. "What are you thinking? I asked him, seriously curious. He just looked at me.
"Why?"
I shrugged, hoping he would tell me. When he didn't, I said, "I just wanna know."
He ran a hand through his think brown curls gelled over. "I dunno. I guess I was thinking about the first time that I can remember seeing fireworks and actually enjoying them."
I nodded, remembering when his family was at our house for a fourth of July; Rob and I wouldn't sit still. Of course, it didn't help that his older sister, Becky, encouraged us while his older brother, Joey, yelled at us to please shut up.
Yes, the good old memories. It'd been fun.
The fireworks were going to end soon, and I turned to Rob and told him, "Quick, make a wish!"
He looked at me stupidly. "Why?"
"Just because. On this last big one -" BOOM "-make a wish!"
So we did. I wished that someday I would become a famous movie director or actress. And Rob - well, he wouldn't tell me his. And I didn't tell him mine (although he probably already knew).
But hey, you know the rule: If you tell your wish to anybody; even your best friend; it just might not come true.

Well.... not this one imparticular; this is my first "mini-series" so I don't know EXACTLY what that means but I'm going to post more of different things happening to them... and then - HOPEFULLY!! - a big bang ending which I've been working on for almost 2 years! |
