"The cops are on the way," Jason said, finally.
"Ok," replied Steven.
He looked back at the unconcious girl laying on the ground next to him. Then he glanced at the locket clutched in his hand.
What did the message in the locket mean? Who would be after a girl as beautiful as her?
"Hey, what's that?" asked Jason, gesturing to the locket. For some reason, Steven hesitated, and wondered if he should tell Jason what he found. He finally concluded that there was no reason not to.
"It was around her neck. Look, I think her name's Anna," he said, showing him the words engraved on the front, "and look on the inside... this message. It's definately not supposed to be there."
Jason read out loud, "'you can never fully escape my grasp.' What the fuck? Dude, we're messin with one fucked up son of a bitch."
A woman was sitting at her kitchen table. Her telephone sat right in front her. She sat and stared at it for hours. Her long blonde hair was pulled back in a ratty ponytail, her eyes were bloodshot and puffy, and she hadn't bathed in days. She was a wreck, but she didn't care. All she cared about was getting her daughter back.
A noise from the hallway startled her.
"Maggie, I didn't see anything out of the ordinary."
She looked up to see a young man of her daughters age standing in the doorway. Her eyes sank even lower than they already were.
"Oh Mike, I know you love her, so you must know how I feel. I just miss her so much!"
Mike nodded, and clutched heart shaped locket around his neck. He did love her.
"You can go home now," said Maggie, softly, "It must kill you to be here when she's not."
He ducked his head, and headed out of the kitchen into the living room, and mumbled a short "goodbye."
He did his best not to look around as he passed through the room. Usually, this was his favorite room, but not today. He didn't want to see her smiling face on the walls and tables. As he neared the end of the room, he couldn't help himself. There was one picture he had to see.
It was Anna at her sixteenth birthday party. Mike remembered that day like it was yesterday. She spent the whole week before nagging at him, and making sure he helped her make EVERYTHING perfect. At the time, he thought the whole process was stupid. On the day of the party, he saw the dress that she spend hours looking for, and even more hours touching up. He saw the make up job that she worked on over and over, day after day. He saw the shoes that she spent 200 dollars on, despite his argument that they weren't worth that much. But he also saw something else.... he saw the most beautiful woman he'd ever laid eyes upon. At that moment, he decided that all those hours were worth it. That was the day he bought the lockets. One for her, and one for him. They were both identical, except his was engraved with "Anna and Mike" instead of "Mike and Anna."
In the picture, she had just eaten the first bite of her three story cake, and she was laughing. A little bit of icing was on the left corner of her mouth. She was gorgeous.
Anna hated this picture. She said she was laughing too hard, and she looked stupid, and the icing ruined her whole look.
Mike felt tears sting his eyes again. He tore his head away from the picture, and sprinted out the door to his car.
