It's Different Now [4]

“Leigh, we have to be at the doctor’s office in an hour so get up and get some breakfast.” I heard my mom say as she was shaking me awake. I pulled my face out form under the covers and scowled at the sunlight coming through my, now open, curtains. She walked out of my door and I saw Jess looking in from the hallway.

“I’m up! What do you what?” I asked loudly as I stumbled out of my comfortable bed.

“Olivia and Dan are in the living room waiting for you. Something about prom.” She said carefully as she walked in and pulled a black outfit out of my closet.

“Shit! I forgot she wanted to go shop for prom dresses before everyone else. I cant go, I have a doctors appointment. Besides, if I pick out a dress now, it will not fit my in six months for prom.” I said, mostly to myself.

“Well, dad was eyeing Dan like he wanted to kill him so you better get dressed and get in there.” She said as she handed me the outfit she picked out and walked out of my bedroom. It was my favorite Black jeans(the ones I wore when I was bloating, so I knew they would fit perfectly around my slight baby-bump) and a black long sleeve with my name on it in little rhinestones. I quickly put them on and found my most comfortable shoes…my pink and black converses. I slipped them on and opened my door. I quietly had a miniature panic attack and headed for the living room. As promised, there sat my best friend who I betrayed and the father of the child I am carrying, who happens to her boyfriend.

“Leigh, come on. We said that we would go get our prom dresses and pick out a tux for the guys today.” She ordered me around as usual. I sighed.

“Olivia, I cant go but I do have something to tell you.” I said quietly as I looked at Dan. He looked horrified but he didn’t say anything to stop the conversation.

“What do you want to tell me?” She had a more serious look on her face, noticing everyone’s expressions. My dad walked out of the room, not wanting to hear all the details and Jess put her arm around me.

“I slept with Dan in December.” I said as a whisper through massive amounts of tears. She looked disbelieving but hurt.

“Why would you make something like that up. It isn’t funny. Dan would never do that to me.” She said, certain it was true.

“I’m not making it up Olivia. I slept with him the night of my sweet sixteen but I felt horrible about it. I would’ve never told you but--” I stopped myself, knowing I hadn’t told Dan about the pregnancy yet.

“But what? You wanted to rub it in? You are a selfish conniving little bitch!” She yelled.

“But I’m pregnant!” I yelled back. She stalked up to me and slapped me as hard as she could. I fell to the floor and started sobbing. Not at the sting of the slap, but the pain of a ten year friendship ending.

“It’s Brett’s right?” Dan asked after about five minutes of silence. I looked up at him and shook my head. “Oh my god! I cannot do this. Leigh, I cannot be a father at sixteen.” He started.

“Then you should have kept it in your pants daddy.” Jess scorned from beside me.

“You can leave now Dan. I didn’t even want to tell you about it. Go try and fix things with Olivia. I can raise this baby on my own. I don’t need any help from you.” I said. He walked out of the front door without looking at me once more or saying anything else.

“Leigh, Dr. Smith is waiting for us. We have to get to her office.” My mother said as she handed me an apple. “Lets go.” She said as she helped me off of the floor. I grabbed my jacket and walked out of the door. I slid into the backseat of my mother’s silver Volvo to try and avoid a conversation. “That was a very good thing you did. Not keeping it a secret from her any longer. She will come around and forgive you.” My mother said, apparently not noticing how much I didn’t want to talk. I nodded at everything she said until we reached the doctors office. The building was too warm and smelled of latex and sickness. I always hated the smell of this place. I sat in one of the uncomfortable ugly navy blue chairs while my mother checked me in with the woman behind the counter. Nurse Bridget. She has been sitting at that desk for as long as I can remember. She has always worked here.

“Hey Leigh.” I heard someone say. I turned my head and a boy about my age was waving slightly.

“Hey.” I replied gloomily. He had a concerned look on his face so he came and sat next to me.

“What’s wrong?” He asked me.

“Nothing. And why would I tell you? I don’t even know who you are.” I said while twirling my hair around my finger out of boredom.

“We have been going to school together since kindergarten. I was your first friend until you dumped me for the queen bee Olivia.” He explained.

“Jamie Levine? Oh my god, you grew up! I’m sorry about the Olivia thing. Maybe it would’ve been better if I stayed friends with you instead of her.” I said, assessing the situation I am in.

“Leigh Ann Walsh.” An unfamiliar nurse called my name.

“I’ll see you later.” I said as I stood up and walked in the door to the examination rooms.

“We’re going to go some tests and then see if we can find the sex of the baby.” The nurse said. I stopped dead in my tracks and thought, ‘this is really happening’.
