“Skylar?” Chase started, “Why are we walking like this?”
“I don’t know. I just… He was standing there and I just knew no matter what I did, he was going to follow. So I just reacted.” She replied as she let go of his arm.
“So what are you going to do now?” Chase asked. Although the tone in his voice told Skylar that he didn’t really care to know.
“Probably spend the rest of the night avoiding him.” She sigh slightly. She stopped and looked around a minute. “Where did you leave Landon and Claire?”
“Hard to say!” He called back to her as he continued to walk further away from her. Skylar frowned a bit. She watched him as he disappeared into the crowd and decided she should have just ignored him and left. She poked around the crowded field a few more minutes until she spotted Landon and Claire talking to some of Landon’s old buddies from school.
“Hey, guys.”
“Sky… I thought you were leaving?” Landon stated.
“I was, but I decided to stay.” She replied. “Where’s Chase?”
“I don’t really know. He ran off about twenty minutes ago to take a piss.” Landon stated.
“Is that so?” The aggravated look on her face brought a puzzling look to his.
“Why?”
“Nothing… just curious.” Skylar replied. Claire grabbed her arm and linked it with hers.
“Come with me….” she started, “Landon, we’re going to go relax in the stables. Don’t drink to much.” Claire called to him as her and Skylar made their way to the stables.
“So….”
“so….”
“You like Chase?” Claire asked. Skylar looked up with her. The seriousness that occupied her face, brought a slight laughter to Skylar‘s.
“No.” She replied. “He’s just being… really annoying. I was just trying to avoid him.”
“Well, what’s going on?” Claire asked as they walked along the dirt floors of the Stables, they turned into an empty stall and sat down on the bed.
“Nothing. He just followed me to the car.”
“Really? Why?”
“To tell me that leaving only proved that Dylan still gets under my skin.” She paused, “truth is I just think Chase is just trying to get under mine.”
“Chase?” Claire asked. Skylar nodded. “Why would he do that?” She shrugged.
“I don’t know. To get his kicks and giggles through tormenting a pathetic ‘farm girl’ for entertainment?”
“You really think he would do that? I mean, he seems like a nice guy.”
“Yeah, well you haven’t had the pleasure of hearing him gloat about himself yet.” Skylar replied and they both laughed a little.
“You should go out there and find a cute, decent farm boy. Have a little fun. Get over Dylan.”
“I AM over Dylan!” She exclaimed.
“All right…” Claire stated.
“Dylan and I had our thing, I accepted the fact that it was over and I moved on.”
“But that’s just it honey, you haven’t moved on. You’re still wallowing in your own self pity.” She stated. Skylar brought her knees up to her chest and thought a minute about what Claire had just said. She was surely bitter about the whole thing, but she didn’t think she was pitting herself over it. She sighed slightly.
“I moved on from what me and Dylan had together, but I just don’t feel up to a new relationship yet.”
“Ok. And that’s fine. But you can’t hide in the stables forever!” she said with a smile. “I’m going to go get a drink. You all right?”
“Yeah, Go ahead. I’ll be fine, sitting here, wallowing in self pity.” Skylar smiled back. Claire nodded.
“Ok. I’ll see you in a few.” With that, Claire walked out of sight.
Skylar relaxed back on the bed, and closed her eyes. She took into account everything that had happened in the last 18 hours of her life. Her brother returned from college, her best friend Claire was in love, Dylan was back to being his usually asshole self and then, there was Chase. True, Skylar barely knew him. And sure, at first, she was quick to place judgment on him because of where he had come from. She knew she should have tried to push aside her stereotypes, but the more he talked the more he proved her right. Deep inside, Skylar wanted him to do something to prove to her that he wasn’t all the things she thought he was; Snobby, self-absorbed. But she knew that it was highly unlikely he would prove her wrong.
“Hey, I’ve been looking all over for you!” Skylar heard the voice of Dylan floating in her direction.
“I don’t want to talk to you, Dylan!” She rose from the mattress and tried to leave the stall, but Dylan was quick to stop her.
“No! Wait! Look, I’m sorry about earlier. I drank to much and I was out of line.” He stated gently. Skylar rolled her eyes slightly at him.
“And what sobered you enough to care?”
“Seeing you with that guy.” He spoke softly. Skylar eyed him a moment before speaking.
“He’s just a friend of Landon’s, Dylan.” She began. He smiled at her and before he could develop the wrong idea, she continued. “Not that it matters to you, but he’s of no interest to me. He’s just like you, only nicely dressed and composed!”
Dylan laughed lightly and plopped down on the mattress. He smiled up at her slightly as he placed his cup on the other side of him. Despite the fact that he was a jerk most of the time, Dylan was still very attractive. He was the typical well built farm boy with blonde hair, blue eyes and a very James Dean sense of himself. He was very handsome, very charming and equally deceitful in his actions.
“You know its when you say things like that, my heart breaks.” He crooned.
“You have to have a heart for it to break.”
“Oh sweat heart, seriously. You’re killing me!”
“What do you want Dylan?”
“Just to talk!” He stated. “Come on. Sit. Please?”
Skylar debated this action carefully. If she sat with him here, it could turn into something they’ve done a million times over, and she was tired of being his million times over. But, she also knew if she continued to avoid him, he wouldn’t give up on catching her. So she sat down.
“I know that we didn’t exactly have the greatest of relationships…”
“You cheated on me eight times, Dylan.” Skylar stated. He nodded as he looked down at his hands.
“I know, and I also know that I have no excuses for that and for you to still stick by me through all that, made me realize that you deserved better.”
“I do, Dylan.” She began, “Which is why we are no longer together.”
“I know, but I can’t help but think maybe we shouldn’t be apart.” Skylar shook her head and stood to leave the stall.
“If you think I would ever go back out with you, you’re out your tree!” She began towards the entrance of the stables when Dylan pulled her back lightly.
“Sky, look, I know I don’t deserve you. At all. Not even as a friend. But I’m still in love with you. I always have been and I always will be. We were each others first loves. You can’t throw that out with the trash, you can’t just deny that.”
“I don‘t know if it even was love, Dylan.” She crooned. “I was so infatuated with you. With everything you did, and how you carried yourself and how you always knew the right thing to say. You were perfect in my eyes and I thought I would never find anyone like you every again, and that’s why I stuck with you through all the lies, all the cheating. But I know better now, Dylan. I’m not in love with you anymore. I’m not even sure you were ever in love with me.”
“How can you say that?” Dylan asked softly as he caressed her cheek. She backed up slightly.
“How can you hit someone you love?” She asked as tears rolled down her cheek. Dylan dropped his hand down to his side and backed up. He started to walk away. He turned back around once he reached the entrance of the stables.
“You’re going to have to forgive me for that, Skylar.” He said softly. “Sooner, or later.”
“Yes, well later sounds like the better solution!” She hissed slightly. He shook his head and continued walking. Once he turned the corner and was out of sight. Skylar screamed out in frustration. She started her way out the stables and rejoined the crowd of people. She pushed her way through to the other side. She took a moment to catch her breath and sat on a bale of hay. As she sat she gathered all the things said during her conversation with Dylan.
“How could I have dated such an ass?” She asked herself with a sigh. After taking a deep breath, she stood and decided to it was time to leave.
As Skylar made her way over to the make shift parking lot, located over the dried out corn fields, she heard Claire’s soft spoken voice.
“Sky!” She rushed over to her. “I went back to the stables and you weren’t there.”
“Yeah, I decided to go ahead and go home.” Sky stated. “For real this time.”
“Well, All right then. If you really want to.” With the slur of her last word, it was apparent to Skylar, that Landon had took it upon himself to loosen Claire up a little more than usually. This made her frown.
“I’m going to take the car, so call me if you guys need a ride.”
“Ok.” Claire turned around and made her way back into the crowd. Skylar continued her journey to the car. She got in and quickly pulled out and headed home. She turned around the bend of the road rather quickly and slammed on the breaks as an object appeared in the road ahead. Skylar put the care in park and rushed out of the vehicle.
“Have you lost your mind? Get out of the road!” She shouted as she began toward the object. They turned to her, and she sighed. “Chase! You idiot! Do you have any Idea how dangerous this road is at night?”
“More so than usually, I’d say, with you driving on it!”
“What are you doing out here anyway?” She avoided his comment. He gave her a shrug.
“Party got boring.” He began walking again down the street and Skylar just stood there a moment. Not sure what she was going to do. Not sure what he was even wanting her to do. If he even wanted her to do anything at all.
“Get in the car, I’ll drive you back to the house.” She called to him, but he didn’t stop.
“Its nice out I’ll walk!” He called back.
“Some drunk idiot is going to come flying down this road and kill you.” She called back. He turned back to her as he stuffed his hands into the pockets of his jeans. He threw her a smile and shook his head.
“You always this anal?”
“Are you always this much of an ass?” She stated. He stopped a moment to think and then nodded.
“Pretty much!” He quipped before turning back around and heading down the road. Skylar huffed slightly and turned to get back in her car. She started it up and sped her way passed him and down the road towards her house.
A very long summer, indeed
