The Letters - Chapter 10
|
Jayden pulled into the drive way of Bela's home. He looked over at her in the seat next to him.
"What a week, huh?" He laughed lightly.
"Yeah, we're to young for all these problems."
"I've decided to tell my parents about Landon tomorrow." Jayden stated. Bela looked over at him with a smile.
"Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?" Bela asked. He shook his head.
"Believe me, it's better I do it alone." He replied. She nodded. There was a moment of silence between before Bela began to speak again.
"I know its late, but do you want to come in?" Bela asked.
"I probably shouldn't your mom..."
"Isn't home." She smiled, "She'll be gone for at least another couple hours."
"Well where's Landon?"
"Stella from next door watches him. Usually I'd be working tonight." Bela started. "She's usually asleep on the couch by now." a small laugh escaped her lips.
"Um, yeah, ok." Jayden replied.
Bela lead Jayden into the house. She stopped by the couch long enough to tell Stella she could go home.
"He's been asleep since about 9." Stella stated as she headed toward the front door.
"Thanks Stella!" Bela stated as Stella grabbed her things and left the house. Bela turned to Jayden and sighed slightly. "Do you remember the first time I snuck you in here?" She questioned.
"Yes. Your mother was on a date with some loser from the next city over and she had Mrs Statmen watching to make sure I never made it in." Jayden smiled.
"She fell asleep and you came righti n thefront door." Bela laughed lightly at the memory.
"Yes, and if I do recall, that was the first night we had sex." Jayden smirked.
"Yes, it was." Bela spoke softly. "Jayden, why didn't we ever tell anyone about out relationship?" She questioned. Jayden shrugged.
"You wanted to wait it out, then a few months later you got pregnant and we decided it was best no one knew." He spoke.
"I'm sorry..."
"For what?"
"Forcing you to pretend we never happened. That Landon never existed." She paused. "How could I be so stupid to think that would make it better?"
"We were 16. I don't blame you for anything you did." He pulled her in for a hug. She clenched to him closely.
"I've missed you so much." Her words were soft. She pulled back slightly. "Come up stairs...." It was half question, half a demand and his answer to both wasa nod. She lead him upstiars to her room, then went to check on Landon. He was every bit as sound asleep as Stella had stated. She kissed his forehead before leaving the room and going back into hers.
Jayden was seated at the end of her bed. She smiled at him gently. He motioned for her to come to him and she slowly made her way over. Bela straddled his lap as she laid her arms over his shoulders. Jayden smirked at her playfully as his hands rested on her lower back. They stared in each others eyes a moment before Bela leaned in and kissed him, soft and sweet. She leaned her forehead gently against his, a huge sigh escaped her lips.
"I've missed you, so much..." She crooned.
"I'm here now." He spoke softly, kissing along her neck, "And I'm all yours." A gently whisper was enough to disarm her worry and as Jayden's hands eased off her shirt, there was no way she could say no.
The door creeped open, as Taylor slid his way in the door. He closed it gently behind him. As he made his way around the corner toward the steps, he heard the angry voice of his father ringing in his ears.
"Where have you been?" Scott questioned. Taylor stopped but did not turn to look at him.
"I had to go see a friend." He replied.
"Its almost 11... you were suppose to meet me and Sylvia at the restaurant at 7!"
"I know, but something came up!"
"Something came up? Something ALWAYS comes up with you Taylor." He shouted. "I swear sometimes I think that you don't even care about this family anymore!" Scott spat, Taylor shot around to him.
"What family Dad?" He shouted, "The family that used to go places, do things together? Or the family that split way when I was ten cause something better and younger shook its ass in your face?"
"That's not fair, Taylor!" Scott stated.
"Fair? I'll tell you whats fair. My mother hasn't seen me in years cause she's too upset to even look you in the face. And you, you'd rather I be sent off to some overpaid and overrated private school then deal with me. Why do you think I kept fucking up dad? I just needed someone to realize that I was hurting here too! That I needed help through it! But what did you see? Just another teenager going through teenage things." Taylor shook his head as tears fell from his eyes. "One of the greatest guys I have ever met died, Dad. DIED!" He shouted, "And just today, another friend of mine would rather try to kill herself than deal with the pain of losing him." He wiped his face, "Did you bother to ask what was going on with me, Dad? Or did you just assume it was some temparary teen angst?" He began up the stairs and then turned back to him. "No, I know what it was, you were too busy trying to make a perfect little life for yourself than worrying about the tragedy that is your son!" He began back up the steps.
"Taylor..." Scott called to him.
Taylor went into his room, shut the door and locked it. He dumped out the contents of his backpack and began stuffing what he could into them. He looked around one last time, making sure there was nothing he was forgeting. He walked over to his dresser and pulled out a tin case. He opened it and pulled out all the cash that was hidden in it. Opening, his window he climbed out on the ledge and jumped down from roof. He came around the front of the house and took one last look around before he turned away and left it all behind.
The music blared loudly from within the house as Gagent began up the walk. He looked up and noticed a lot of familiar cars, along with some not so familiar. He took a deep breath as he opened the front door to his home and the loud music only grew that much louder. A thick cloud of smoke from both, legal and illegal means, flowed out and hit him in the face. Trying not to breathe too much of it in, he set off into the house. He looked around quizzically at the questionable faces, but the only ones he was looking for was his mothers and his brothers. He spotted his mother in the kitchen hanging over the counter, laughing hysterically. It was obvious she was drunk and Gagent took a deep breath and pushed his way through to confront her.
"Mom!" He shouted, but through her drunken state and the loudness of the man talking next to her, she couldn't hear him. "MOM!" he screamed. She turned to him and then smiled slightly.
"Oh hey, honey..." she slurred, "I thought you were at your fathers!"
"No, I'm not. What are all these people doing here mom?" He asked, "You know you're on probation!"
"They're just some friends dear." She replied.
"I'm sure!" Gagent spat. " Where's Nicholas?"
"Who?" She asked, slight confusion on her face.
"Nicholas, your son?" He offered. She nodded repeatedly.
"Oh yes, he was the one who went to your fathers."
"Yeah, I can't say that I blame him." Gagent stated.
"Well, what is that suppose to mean?"
"I don't know mom, have you looked at yourself lately. I mean you're not exactly my first choice either, but someone has to make sure you don't choke on your vomit when you sleep." he stated harshly. She reached over and smacked him.
"Don't you ever talk to me like that again!" She spat. He nodded.
"Right..." He said softly as he shook his head and headed back to the front door. He grabbed his mothers keys from the end table and headed out to her car. He got in and manuvered his way around the cars to get out.
After a few moments on the road, he pulled into the cemetary. He walked the lots gently until he spoked the grave marking for Marks grave. He stood beside the freshly covered hole, before kneeling down beside it. He didn't say anything, just say and stared. He didn't have to say anything. Being there was enough.
"Bela... " Jayden called gently. She opened her eyes and smiled up at him. "I have to go."
"I know." She said softly. She rose from the bed and grabbed a night shirt out of her drawer. She slid it on quickly as she followed Jayden down the hall. They turned into Landons room and she stood at the door way as she watched Jayden lean over slightly in the crib. He kissed Landon's cheek and whispered a soft "I love you" before turning back around to Bela.
"I'm going to come back by tomorrow after I talk with my mom and dad." He stated in a hush tone. She nodded. They began down the stairs and Bela opened the door for him to leave. He advanced closer to her and brought his hand to her cheek. "We're going to do this right this time, all right?"
"Yeah..." She laughed lightly.
"All right. I love you, and I'll see you tomorrow, good news or bad news." He smiled.
"I love you, too."
"Bye, Bel."
"Bye!" She stood there a moment and watched as he pulled out of the driveway before closing the door and locking it. She turned around, and jumped with a loud gasp.
"For Christ sake mother!" She stated as she held her chest, "You scared the crap out of me!"
"What the hell was he doing here? At this hour non-the-less?"
"Don't start mom!" Bela whined as she headed for the steps. Her mother grabbed her arm and pulled her back around to her. "Ouch!"
"What the hell is wrong with you, huh?" She began, "Its not enough that your life was cut short because he couldn't keep to himself and you don't know how to say no? Do you have to put yourself through that again? Do you feel the need for the attention?"
"You don't get it mom, you never have!" Bele stated as she turned away and headed up the steps.
"He loves you?" She called, Bela stopped.
"Yes, he does."
"Let me take a stab at it, he says he hasn't been the same since you guys broke up. Doesn't feel right leaving you to raise his son all alone. He wants to be in his life, wants to be in yours. Wants to help you raise him. Wants to love you, take care of you?" She asked and then laughed lightly, tears in her eyes. "The same song and dance your father spit at me two years after you were born. And I'll admit, I was weak, and I gave in, cause I was truely alone, I had no one, not even my mother. And the next thing I know... You're ten years old and he runs out with the waitress at your birthday party, and I never see him again." She paused. Bela turned to her, sadness, compassion in her eyes. "I'm just trying to keep you from the same mistakes I made, Bela."
Bela descended the steps and hugged her mother.
"I know mom. I know. And I appreciate everything you're doing for me, but Jayden is not dad. He's a good man. We were just confused about life. I know its not going to be easy, but we love each other, and we're going to try and make it work. That's all we can do, if in the end, we're not meant to be, then we're not meant to be. But right now, this is right..." Bela stated. Her mother looked at her softly for, what seemed, the first time in over a year.
"I hope you're right..."
Amanda's mother sat at her bedside as she slept, reading over the letter that Mark had sent Amanda. She knew she shouldn't have, but the curiousty got the best of her. She looked over as she heard Amanda stir in her sleep. She smiled down at her softly.
"What are you doing awake?" Amanda asked with a yawn as she sat up slightly. Her mother showed her the letter. "Oh, did you read it?" She nodded.
"I'm sorry..."
"No, its ok,"
"I don't get it though." She stated with a sigh. "Why would he send you a letter that talks about Taylor?" She questioned. Amanda shrugged.
"I'm not sure. I mean, at first I thought he just put them in the wrong envelope but, I think he's just trying to get us all together."
"Why would he go through so much trouble?"
"I don't know..." She paused, and then smiled slightly, "But maybe its about time we all found out."
"What do you mean?"
"Do you think you can get me out of here by tomorrow night?"
"They said if all your test go well in the morning you should be fine to leave, why?"
"Its about time we all for have a talk with Mark...."
