The Letters - Chapter 04
|
"Mr. Daniels," the nervous voice of a balding middle-age man spoke out. Gagent stood and walked over to him. "Your mother is stable, she should be fully recovered after a few days rest. There was no serve damage." Gagent gave the doctor a nod.
At a hospital, not to far from home, Gagent's mother laid, battered and bruised. The result of a drunken altercation with his father. The usual scenerio would be dead beat dad comes hom from the bar, completely lit and the slighest case of defiance cause a puch fest. But in Gagents case, this wasn't so typical. Gagent's mother was the issue. A recovering alcoholic, at least, she was. But when the news of Gagent's father's plan to marry his girlfriend broke way to her, she fell off more than just 'the wagon'. A confrontation ensued and because of her intoxication, a false step caused her to tumble down the front porch of Gagent's father's home.
As Gagent made his way into the hospital room. The look of complete disappointment flooded his face.
"Don't look at me like that," his mother hissed, "You look just like him."
"Why do you keep doing this mom?"
"I'm tired of you people always trying to tell me how to live my life!"
"You people? I'm your son!" Gagent spat. "I can't do this anymore." Gagent began for the door.
"Should have known when your father ran out on us that one day so would you!"
"He didn't run out on us, mom." Gagent began, "Cause let's face it, you had ran out long before he ever thought about leaving."
With that, Gagent let the room. Blocking out his mother's voice, repeatedly calling out his name. As he rounded the corner it was out of sight, out of mind.
Gagent walked into the waiting room where his father and little brother, Nicholas, waited.
"She all right?" His father questioned. Gagent nodded.
"They're going to keep her over night. So if you could take Nicholas, I'm just going to go over to a friends for the night.
"You sure you don't want to come home?" His father asked.
"I just think I need to be away for awhile. Besides, this and Mark.... Its just a bit to take in." Gagent confessed.
"All right, Gage." His father nodded, "I'm sorry to hear about Mark. He was a great kid."
"Yeah... I'll see you later Nic, all right?" Nic nodded. "Call me, if you need me."
Gagnet made his way out of the hospital. Truth was he didn't really have anywhere to go. He just knew he couldn't go home. Didn't want to go home.
