Argh, she had nothing to do. All of her friends were at school. Kati glanced at the clock, and had to do a double take. She was right the first time. It was already 11:30. She went downstairs to get something to satisfy her newly developed hunger. On the fridge was a piece of paper. It read:

You were still sleeping when we left, so we thought you might as well be rested. If you could I would appreciate it if you would, vacuum the downstairs, do the dishes, and do your laundry. It’s not that much you should be able to get it done before we get home. Tonight we will be dining with the Kingstons, there son goes to school with you, I think. Well be dressed by the time I come home. We are going to Pollo de Megirino for dinner. I’ll call a little before I get to the house, lock the door and wait on the porch.

Her mom was an idiot, not even an observant idiot. Kati had gone out with Tyler Kingston for the past three years. When Kati had learned of her short life span, instead of staying by her to offer support, he dumped her and started a “relationship” with some preppy girl. He was an @ss and she never wanted to see him again.

Let’s back up a minute. Kati would have been a senior this year. Her parents were well off, okay let’s face it, they were loaded. She had been a cheerleader in freshman year and first semester of sophomore year, but she had kept getting dizzy spells and migraines while cheering so she had had to drop it. She had quit school half- way through Junior year. She was tall at 5’11”, had hair that looked like a bad dye job all the time with platinum blonde at the bottom and dark, dark brown at the top. She didn’t have tan lines and she never had she had green eyes and alabaster skin. She pushed the note between the refrigerator and the counter. When she turned around there was a man there. He looked about 20, he was kind of rigid, she stepped back.

He put his arm out, she blinked there was something wrong with him like he was frayed around the edges almost. He wore chaps and boots with spurs. There was a coiled rope fixed to the side of his jeans. His hat had been swept off of his head and into his hand. “Look, I don’t know who you think you are but I’m warning you my step father is upstairs sleeping, one yell and he’ll come kick your ass.”

“Kati, I know who you are. There is no one upstairs, and even if there was they couldn’t hurt me.” He took a few steps back obviously realizing that no matter how close he tried to get to her, she would always retaliate by moving backward. “Listen, my name is Heath. I am not what you think I am. There is a lot you need to know, so sit down and I will explain as best I can.”
