“Go wolverines!” I heard one of the football players yell from behind me. I turned around and smiled. Then, I saw my best friend at the time, Megan.
“I can’t believe summer’s finally here,” she gushed. “Can you?”
“No,” I confessed. “I’m so excited. I think Kevin and I might actually…you know.”
“Oh my God,” she screeched. “When?!”
“I’m not sure,” I began but as if on cue, I felt his strong muscular arms wrap around my waist and his lips touch my hair. I took in his scent and sighed softly.
“Hey there beautiful,” Kevin smiled showing off his fresh braces-off teeth. I turned in his arms and smiled back. His brown curly hair felt soft as I let my fingers find their way into his hair. His hazel eyes glazed over with lust and I smiled. “Geez, got you goin’ already, do I?” I smiled and bit my lip.
“Oh God,” Megan giggled, rolling her eyes. “I’ll let you too alone.” She walked off, eyeing some guy she had the hots for. I looked up at Kevin and smiled.
“When does football practice start?” I asked curiously.
“The middle of July so we have an entire month and a week with each other,” he informed me.
“A month and a week? Why not two weeks? That’s half a month,” I interrogated.
His face fell. “Well, I guess we’re going up to my parents’ friend’s cabin for a week. It’s up in Eagle River. It’s only a week. But I can’t call of anything.”
I pouted. “That’s not fair.”
“I know baby but I’ll find a way. I promise,” he leaned forward. I smiled and stood on my tiptoes so our lips made full contact. Beep beep. My mom honked her horn. I turned around and saw her motioning for me to get in the car.
“My mom’s here,” I sighed. “I’ll call you tonight alright? I love you.” I gave him one last peck on the lips before running off so not to hear his response. This was going to be an awesome summer, I thought to myself.
“I can feel the pressure, it’s getting closer now—,” my cell phone blared from my pocket. The caller ID read Kayla. I answered it quickly before my mom could ask any questions. “Hey girl!” I giggled into the phone.
“Hey! Do you wanna come to Buchner with me and Daniel tomorrow?” she asked. Daniel was her little brother and it was our yearly tradition to go to Buchner pool the first day of every summer together.
“Sure thing! I’m not going to break our tradition,” I assured her.
“Well I thought you’d wanna hang with Kev but I guess not!” I could hear the happiness in her voice.
“So I’ll see you tomorrow about 12:30ish?” I asked, making sure the plans were definite.
“Yup! See you then! Love ya!” she babbled into the phone. “Love you too. Bye,” I hung up and looked over at my mom.
“Kayla?” she predicted.
I laughed, “Yeah. I’m going to Buchner with her and her brother tomorrow like always.”
“I figured,” she said, a matter-of-factly.
I giggled and looked out the window, wishing tomorrow would come soon. That night, I couldn’t sleep at all. I was so excited to see all my friends from South. Seeing as I went to West and was an active member of the drama club and the band, I never really had time to juggle drama, band and maintaining my honor roll reaching grade point average. When my alarm went off at 10:30, I practically jumped out of my bed. I was ready in a matter of minutes as I ran out into the living room.
“I’m ready,” I beamed at my mom. She laughed and called the dog as she followed me out to the car. We drove there in silence. I smiled and gave her a hug and kiss goodbye as I waved at Kayla. I ran and gave her a hug.
“Ahh! It’s been so long!” I laughed, spinning in circles still hugging her.
“I know, too long!” she laughed back, as we stopped spinning. “So yeah, they raised the prices…AGAIN!”
“Oh God,” I giggled. “How much does it cost this year?”
“$3!” she exclaimed.
“Oh my Lord! That’s so pricy!” I shook my head. It was going to be a long wait. When they finally let us in, I ran in with glee. The sun was blazing and bronzing my skin, but hey! I could get a tan while swimming too! Kayla, Daniel and I raced for our special spot under the umbrella on the painted penguin. We set down our things and I immediately went to the diving board. I had always wanted to be on the swim team, but I wasn’t what you called ‘fit.’ I dove in and joined Kayla and Daniel by the basketball hoop.
After playing for a little while, Kayla nudged me. “See that guy?” she whispered. I nodded. She smiled triumphantly, “I made out with him.” I looked the guy up and down. He was really well toned, though not too muscular and his blue eyes lit up as he laughed at his friend and shook his head of blonde hair. He was quite the hottie, and that’s why I didn’t believe Kayla. Don’t get me wrong, Kayla was a pretty girl, but not so pretty that a hot, blonde, tall muscular guy would make out with her. I smiled to myself.
I’ll find that out for myself tomorrow, I thought mischievously.
