I don’t care what they say, I’m in love with you…

Bella awoke to the sound of her cell phone ringing. She wiggled out of Mark’s arms and looked at her phone. The caller ID read ‘Danielle.’ Bella smiled and answered the phone.

“You have great timing,” she laughed.

“Bella?” Danielle sobbed.

Bella’s expression changed. “Oh God Danielle! What is it sweetheart?” Mark awoke and sat up, kissing the back of Bella’s neck. Bella waved him away. “What’s going on Danielle?”

“It’s Derek,” she sobbed on the other end of the phone.

“What about Derek?” Bella said, looking at Mark. Mark got up and immediately began dressing. “Okay,” Bella assured, “we’ll be right there.”

“What is it?” Mark asked.

“It’s Derek,” Bella whispered. “He’s been in a horrible car accident.”

Mark sped most of the way to the hospital. He was scared out of his mind. Derek was his best friend and had been since junior high. If anything happened to him, he didn’t know what he’d do. And that’d he’d be leaving Danielle worried him the most. Danielle and Derek truly loved each other and not even death could break that apart.

Bella’s heart was racing as well. Danielle was the strongest person she knew, but she wasn’t sure she would be able to handle this by herself. Although she was independent, Bella was sure she would be able to help Danielle in some way.

As they arrived at the hospital, Mark gave the car to the free valet parking service. Bella had gone inside and found out that Derek was intensive care. They took the elevator up there together and when they saw Danielle, they feared the worst.

“What happened?” Bella asked while Mark talked to the doctor.

Danielle sobbed, burying her head into Bella’s shoulder. “He was on his way home from work and as he was turning onto our street, a drunk driver ran a red light and the truck went full force into the car,” Danielle explained, digging her cell phone out of her purse. “Look at this picture of the car.” She showed Bella the picture and Bella gasped. The car was a mangled wreck of metal. She was surprised that Derek was even alive. After seeing that picture, Bella began crying with Danielle. They held each other and Bella tried to assure Danielle that everything was going to be okay.

“No! Everything’s not going to be okay!” Danielle shrieked through her sobs.

“Why not?” Bella asked.

“I’m pregnant!” Danielle screeched once more.

“Pregnant?” Bella smiled and hugged Danielle again. “Awe honey! I’m so happy for you!”

Danielle smiled and then her face fell. “And Derek doesn’t know! I never got the chance to tell him!” She sobbed again.

Ten minutes later, Mark came over with a grave expression on his face.

“What is it?” Bella asked.

“Derek,” Mark looked down.

“What is it?!” Danielle stood, looking into Mark’s eyes. “What!?”

“He’s dead,” Mark said. “He died two minutes ago.”

“NO!” Danielle screamed, falling to the floor. Bella took Danielle in her arms and held her until her screams and sobs were muffled.

“I’m so sorry,” Bella whispered.
