“Who is this?” Brian said, completely monotone as his face became redder than a cherry.

Maria looked down, embarrassed more than anything. She didn’t know what to say. Eric stepped in and said, “I’m her boyfriend.”

“Boyfriend?” Brian responded, looking at the baby. “Oh, my God. Is that her?” Maria only nodded, her face pink from blushing. Brian looked up at Eric and Maria and bent down next to the carrier that was hanging from Maria’s hand. Brian laughed, “She’s got my eyes.” He was so proud. I wish he could have been this way when I had told him, Maria thought. Scarlett laughed gleefully as she gripped onto Brian’s large finger with all five of her tiny ones.

Brian smiled and looked up at Maria sympathetically. “Can we talk?” he asked. Maria nodded and handed the carrier to Eric. “I’ll be right back,” she said, quietly. Maria followed Brian into the back area. “What is it?” she asked, her voice pleading with him to just get this conversation over with.

“I’m sorry,” he said, sighing as the sadness was evident in his voice. “That day after you left, I felt horrible for yelling. It’s just that, it was a complete surprise to me.” Maria nodded curtly. “I understand,” she replied, “but I’ve moved on. You can always come and visit her, but she will know Eric as her father. Eric has been there for me since the beginning of this year, even though he didn’t know about Scarlett.” Maria turned on her heel and walked away. Eric was still in the lobby playing with Scarlett.

“Let’s go,” Maria whispered. Eric grabbed the carrier and followed Maria out to the car.

“I’m sorry,” Eric sighed while strapping Scarlett’s carrier into the back seat. “It wasn’t you,” Maria explained. “When I told him about Scarlett, he freaked out. He told me to get out and that he never wanted to see me again.” They drove back to Maria’s in silence. Eric didn’t know what to say and neither did Maria. Once there, Maria unstrapped her from her carrier and took her inside. Eric followed and helped put Scarlett to bed.

Maria smiled while leaning on the door jamb. Eric was going to be a great father someday. Eric looked up at her and smiled. He walked to her and leaned in. Their lips collided and heat exploded. However, the steam and heat was interrupted by Julianne’s screaming.

“Maria! Come quick! Brian’s campus is on TV!” her mother screamed up the stairs. Eric broke the kiss and ushered Maria and himself down the stairs. They sat down on the couch next to Julianne and listened to the breaking news bulliten. The news that came next was shocking.

The reporter narrated to the scene, “19 year old Brian Schultz was found in his dormitory bathroom, his wrists cut open. We are unsure why the young boy commited suicide but when we have more news we will be sure to let the public know.”
