Julianne looked Eric up and down, as if inspecting him. Maria wasn’t sure if her mom was checking Eric out or just inspecting him to see if he was okay.

“You know, don’t you?” Julianne asked, coyly.

“Yes I do. And that is why I’d like to take her out,” Eric explained. “I know I’m not a mother but I can’t even imagine trying to handle school and a baby at home. And the fact that she has to keep it a secret. It’s inspiring to me how she does it all.”

“Well,” Julianne began, her face hard as concrete, “alright! But you best have her home at a decent hour.”

Maria ran and gave her mom a hug. Julianne seemed surprised at first, just standing there, and then wrapping her arms around her daughter’s body. She had missed that. After Julianne left for her date, Maria readied herself in the upstairs bathroom while Eric played with Scarlett. He was really good with kids. She quickly curled her hair and applied eyeliner and mascara to her eyes. When she was finished she slipped into her black jeans and a pretty white top.

Maria walked down the stairs and Eric just gawked. He thought she looked beautiful.

“Are we taking Scarlett?” Eric asked, smiling down at the baby.

“Um,” Maria said, “I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.”

“Oh come on!” he begged. “It’ll be fun!”

“Oh alright,” Maria stated, giving up.

Eric quickly put Scarlett’s car seat into the back of his car as Maria got into the front seat. Eric carefully fastened Scarlett in her seat and hopped behind the wheel. They headed to the coolest joint in town for teens, The Pizza Parlor. Maria was cautious about going in there because then everyone would know she had a baby and that would be embarrassing.

Eric smiled and took Scarlett out of her seat. Then, he took Maria’s hand and they strolled into the parlor together. As Eric opened the door, he ran right into Brian.
