Grandpa

Short Created on 5-14-08 Views(67) Story Rating G

I didn't know what was happening. Mom simply called me and told me "Your grandpa's in the hospital. Get home now!" When I got home the house was empty. We were in the midst of moving so everything was in boxes.

I was unsure of what was going on. I got back in my car and drove to the hospital, hoping for the best and praying to God that my grandpa would be okay.

My grandpa was 75. He was slightly balding and had white hair. My mom tells me he used to be a hard ass when she was younger, but he could always make me smile, no matter what kind of mood I was in. He can't die, I thought so myself, he just can't!

I pulled into the hospital parking lot and parked my car. I sat there for a few minutes, not wanting to go in and hear any news, whether it was good or bad. I put my head down on the steering wheel and began to sob. What would I do without my grandpa? What would Grandma do? Would she move in with us? Would she live in a nursing home? Millions of thoughts rushed through my head.

Finally, I got up enough courage to walk into the hospital. I looked around the waiting room before going to the desk. I didn't see my mom or my sister in the waiting room, so I went to the desk and asked.

"I'm here to see Roland Jameson," I said, holding back my tears.

"Are you family?" the woman said with a sincere smile because she saw that I was upset.

"Yes," I sniffled. "He's my grandpa."

"One moment please," she said solemnly, and I took it as a bad sign.

My mom came walking out with the woman a few moments later and led me to the room where my grandpa was staying.

"He was doing so well," she said between her body shaking sobs. "I don't understand what happened."

"Well, what did happen?" I asked my mom, hoping that wouldn't make it any worse for her.

"He was driving and he forgot where he was going again," my mom explained, "like he does, you know. And my grandma said about an hour after he was out, she got a call from the hospital and he was here. He stopped in the middle of the road because he was confused. He opened the door as a car was going by and tried to get out but he got hit by the car."

My mom began sobbing. At that moment, I walked into the room, consoling my mother, to see my two aunts and three uncles along with my grandmother, with sad, scared looks on their faces.

It was days before we knew that he was going to be okay. And then that day, the wonderful day of July 17th, my grandparents' wedding anniversary, he opened his eyes. He looked at me and my mother and smiled. Then, he looked at my grandmother and said, "Happy Anniversary, Ella."
