Maria jumped up from her seat and hugged Eric with joy. She didn’t know what had just happened; it had all gone so fast and it was so wonderful.

“You need to meet my mom,” Maria said, the happiness in her voice disappearing.

Eric looked at her questioningly and asked, “What? What’s wrong?”

“Well, this whole time,” Maria explained, “No one has known that I am Scarlett’s mother. Everyone thinks she’s my little sister and that my mom is her mom. I know my mom did it to protect me, but its put so many restraints on me and stress. I have to be careful not to slip up and say ‘my daughter’ instead of saying ‘my sister.’ I don’t think she’s going to approve of the fact that I like you and you like me and I have Brian’s kid.”

“Let’s at least give it a try. Please?” Eric asked, his beautiful eyes begging her.

“Alright. Follow me home,” Maria replied, while grabbing Scarlett’s carrier and heading to the car. She strapped Scarlett in and began her way home. Millions of thoughts rushed through her head. What if she kicks me out? What if she gets mad and tries to take Scarlett away? She didn’t know what would happen. As she pulled into the driveway, she saw Eric pull up and park his truck on the street.

Maria quickly grabbed Scarlett out of her car seat and walked inside the house.

“Mom! I’m home and I brought a friend,” Maria hollered at the stairs while letting out an exasperated sigh. Julianne descended down the stairs smiling, dressed nicely in a fresh white sweater and a knee-length red skirt.

“You like nice,” Maria stated sweetly, hoping that the sucking up would help her chances with Eric.

“I’m going on a date with Mr. Hannon tonight,” she said, smiling slyly.

“My principal?!” Maria exclaimed. “Mom, that’s gross!”

“Anyways, you said you brought a friend?” Julianne began and then she saw Eric. “I know you! You’re Dan’s little brother!”

Maria looked back at her mom. “How would you know that?”

“Well,” Julianne began, “let’s stay off of that subject.”

“I brought him here to see if you’d let him take me out sometime,” Maria said quickly, closing her eyes and waiting for a reaction.
