Scarlett laughed delightfully in the backseat. “Mama!” she exclaimed shrilly.

Maria hit the brakes and put the car in park. She quickly opened the door, took Scarlett out of her car seat and brought her in for a tight hug. Before she knew it, she was crying. It was a happy cry though. Maria gave Scarlett a quick kiss on the forehead and buckled her back in her car seat. Then she began driving again until she arrived at the café. She saw Eric’s car in the parking lot and she took one more deep breath before she got out of the car.

As she approached the door, Maria’s heart was thumping hard in her chest. Scarlett let out a shrill gleeful laugh and Maria saw Eric look up and smile at her. Maria smiled back, her cheeks turning pink. Maria walked in and Eric’s eyes lit up when he saw Scarlett.

“She’s so cute,” Eric said, smiling and letting Scarlett wrap her tiny fingers around his one large one.

“Thanks. She’s the reason I asked you if we could talk,” Maria started explaining.

“I know Maria. I knew I knew you from somewhere. You were Brian’s girlfriend. I heard him talking about you a couple of days ago to Dan. He said that you had disappeared and never told him where you were going. Then, he told Dan that you went to his house the other day and told him you left because you had a baby,” Eric went on, “And I think that that take’s a lot of courage. You’re amazing Maria and I’d be more than happy to be with you whether you have a baby or not.”
