High School Mom[6]
|
Maria woke up the next morning to hear the baby crying. “Mom!” she screamed. “Make her shut up!” She put her pillow over her head and tried ignoring the piercing cries, but ignoring them only made them worse. Maria eased herself out of bed and noticed her mother was gone, and left her with the baby until noon. Maria walked into the baby’s bedroom. It looked almost orange, the way the sun hit the light pink walls.
“Shhh, Scarlett,” Maria attempted soothing. “Shhh. It’s okay.”
The baby’s cries only grew louder and shriller. Maria shut her eyes tight and sank into the rocking chair next to the baby’s bed. “Why me?” she sobbed to herself. “Why?”
She picked up her baby girl, for the first time in a long time and rocked her gently. “Shhh,” she soothed. “It’s okay.” The baby slowly drifted off to sleep and Maria suddenly felt a wave of love wash over her. She looks just like Brian, she thought to herself before tucking the baby back into her crib and slowly closing the door.
“I’m home!” Julianne yelled cheerfully up the stairs.
“Hi Mom!” Maria greeted happily, giving her mother a big hug.
“What gotten into you?” her mother asked curiously.
“Nothing,” Maria answered, walking back upstairs to change. Today’s the day, she thought to herself. He needs to know.
“Mom, I’m running to the grocery store,” she said, lying.
“Okay,” Julianne replied from the kitchen. “Make sure you pick up diapers for Scarlett.”
Maria closed the front door and got in her car. She drove out to the campus where she knew Brian would be. I can’t believe I’m going to see him, she thought happily. She parked her car and walked out. She instantly picked Brian out of the crowd. His shaggy black hair and his bright green eyes made him stick out. She walked up in front of him and smiled. “Hi Brian,” she said, smiling nervously.
“Maria?” Brian managed to stutter.
Maria only nodded, hoping he would take her in his arms and kiss her like he used to.
“You just left,” Brian looked down solemnly, “without telling me anything. I haven’t heard from you in a year and a half.”
Maria took a deep breath. “I know,” she stated. “But there’s something I need to talk to you about.”
Brian nodded, “Alright,” he grabbed her hand. “This way.”
Brian brought her in his dorm room and waited impatiently.
“Well, what is it?” he asked.
“Remember last year? Our last time together at the park? We had sex?” she asked.
He nodded, smiling as he remembered, “Yeah, I remember.”
“Well, you didn’t wear a condom and I got pregnant,” Maria let it all out.
“What?” Brian asked, shocked. “No. You’re lying.”
“No I’m not. Really I’m not,” Maria said as she dug through her purse, “here’s a picture.”
Brian took a good hard look at the picture and shoved it back at her. “Go,” he said, angry.
“But…Brian…,” she stammered.
“JUST GO!” he screamed.
Maria held back her tears until she got in her car. She drove home crying. When she got to her house, her mother was deeply concerned.
“What happened honey? And where’s Scarlett’s diapers?” she asked.
“I didn’t go to the grocery store, Mom. I went and saw Brian. And I told him about Scarlett.”
