Maria tiptoed over to the couch where she set her stuff. She picked up her purse and her coat and walked toward the door.

“I’m sorry Eric,” she said, hoping her lie wasn’t visible, “but I’ve got to go. My mom just called and there’s something wrong with my little sister.”

“Oh, okay,” Eric replied, his disappointment evident. “I’ll see you tomorrow then.”

Maria rushed past him and out the door, not answering him and not looking back. I have to get home, she thought. I have to get away from here. Instead of going home, Maria drove for a half an hour until she reached a park; the park where she and Brian had their last date together before she left suddenly. She didn’t get out of the car, but she just sat there, wondering what they would be like today; her, Brian and THEIR baby. She sat there, thinking, for a long time. She remembered what their last date was like. They were smiling, laughing, and holding each other. It seemed like an eternity ago when she last smiled or laughed.

Maria drove home around 1 in the morning to find her mother there waiting for her.

“Where the hell have you been?” her mother screamed at her.

“Out,” Maria muttered under her breath.

“It was your night to take care of the baby,” her mother rubbed in her face, trying to rock the baby to sleep in her arms. It was unsuccessful and the baby kept screaming and crying.

“You’re telling everyone it’s yours,” Maria screamed, seething, at her mother. “Why don’t you act like it here at home too? You can have the baby. I don’t give a fuck!” Maria stormed up the stairs, slamming her door and flopping down on her bed. She looked at the clock and noticed that Brian would just be getting home from work. I need to talk to him, she thought. He deserves to know. Maria scrounged through her messy backpack and found her cell phone. She went through the contacts and found Brian’s cell phone number, which she didn’t have memorized anymore. She nervously hit the ‘send’ button and waited, anticipating him answering his phone.

“Hello?” Brian answered. Maria smiled. It’s so good hearing his voice, she thought. “Maria?” Maria suddenly became nervous and hung up her phone. Then, she decided what she had to do.
