Although Matt hadn’t actually “lived” in this century, he knew what rape meant. He knew it was serious and a deep rush of sympathy for Julia rushed over him. He wasn’t sure what to do. Should I hug her, he thought. No, no. She doesn’t need physical contact right now. Maybe she does. UGH! Then, Julia looked over at him, scared to see his reaction. She saw a look of what looked almost like sadness.

“It was a long time ago,” she began to explain. Matt stopped her by putting his finger to her lips. She didn’t understand until he opened his arms and waited for her to come to him. Julia’s eyes began to water and she hid herself in Matt’s cold, but still warm, embrace. She buried her face in his chest and cried for what seemed like forever.  When she finally came up for air, it was darker and the sun had set. Matt down at her with sympathetic eyes and said, “Let’s get out of here.”

Julia nodded and got in the passenger door. She quickly looked at herself in the mirror. She hadn’t looked so sad for a long time. Matt got in the driver’s side once he had picked everything up from their picnic and started the car. They pulled out and went down the highway, away from the town.

 “Where are we going?” Julia asked, quietly.

“We’re going away from here,” Matt stated, “so you don’t have to be scared to go home at night.”

“But what about school?” Julia interjected. “People will start to wonder and then they’ll send people to look for me and I don’t want you to get in trouble.”

“I won’t,” Matt said, with a hint of promise in his voice. “I’ve got money and if you’d like, we could go back to your house and get some of your things. However, I don’t suggest it. Is your father an alcoholic? Is that why he…” he stopped, but continued with difficulty, “rapes you?”

Julia only nodded, rolling down her window and letting her chestnut brown hair whip around her face.

“Would you like to go back and get your things?” Matt asked, praying she would say no.

“Yes,” she said and Matt’s stomach dropped.

If her father touches her, he thought, he’s a dead man.
