Maria quickly changed into her leotard and went  into the fieldhouse. She sat down away from the other girls. She was sick of hearing them talk as if she wasn't there.

 "I heard she overdosed on her medication and her mom brought her here to get away from the criticism in Brookfield," she heard one girl say.

"Oh, no," she heard another girl jump in. "I heard she was cheerleading captain and she was kicked off for doing steroids."

"I heard that too!" she heard the first girl exclaimed in a whisper. "And I heard she was dating Brian Larter, Brookfield's quarterback and when she moved, she just left and didn't tell him anything."

Then the whistle blew. "Alright girls. Line up at the mats," Mr. Cambridge yelled over their giggles. All off the girls stood up and sauntered over to the mats, with Maria getting there last. 

"Alright," he began. "Can anyone here do anything really good as far as gymnastics goes?"

Maria stayed quiet until she noticed everyone was look at her. Their eyes were saying 'Go. You know you can do it you prude little skank.' 

"I was on the cheerleading squad at my old school," Maria piped up.

"Alright Maria," Mr. Cambridge shouted with obvious enthusiasm in his voice. "Show us what you can do."

Maria went in front of all the other girls and took a deep breath.

'I can do this,' she thought.

She took another deep breath in, took her stance and gave it her all. She did a round-off back handspring and ended it with a back tuck. Her classmates were astonished as her feet went over her head multiple times. As she landed, she looked up apprehensively. Eyes were wide, even Mr. Cambridge's. Suddenly, a soft clap was heard. The, more and more and soon the entire class was clapping for her.

'Welcome home girl,' she thought as she smiled to herself.
