“No, no,” Matt started. “You don’t understand.”

Julia interrupted him. “I don’t get it. How can someone so cute be so nuts?”

Julia got up and walked to his car and then turned around. “Oh and one more thing.”

“Yeah?” Matt looked up, his blue eyes sad.

“APRIL FOOL’S!” she exclaimed and burst out in a laugh that made her sound like a hyena. When she noticed Matt wasn’t laughing with her, she stopped and opened her eyes. He had a puzzled look on his face and by what his eyes told her, he wasn’t convinced that she was joking. She chuckled again and sat down.

Julia put her hand on his arm and smiled. “You said you’ve been around for abou 250 years, right?”

Matt nodded, avoiding her gaze.

“Then how in the hell can you not know what April Fool’s day is?”

He smiled and shrugged. “Well…I don’t know. What is it? Tell me.”

“Okay,” she began, “on the April 1^st of every year, people play tricks on each other. And since most people fall for them, we call it April Fool’s day.”

Matt nodded and laughed, “So you were joking? You really do believe me?”

“Well,” she got quiet. “It is a bit far fetched, but I do believe you.”

Matt stood up and looked out at the sunset. Julia stood up and joined him. “It’s so beautiful,” she said.

“So are you,” Matt responded quickly, looking down into her eyes.  Julia bit her lip as Matt took her hands in his. Then, she felt dizzy. She didn’t know why or when or how this all happened. All she knew is that she was falling, and with Matt being a vampire, she wasn’t sure which way was the right way to fall.

“Listen, it’s getting dark. I was wondering if I could take you to dinner and then take you to meet Maria and Kyle?”

“Sure. I would love that. But will they want to change me?” Julia asked, cringing.

“No, no.” Matt said. “Everything will be fine. They will both probably suggest that I don’t change you until after you’re done with school and we’re married.”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Julia pulled away. “Marriage is absolutely out of the question.”

“But, why?” Matt asked, confused.

“It’s a long story,” Julia said, her eyes clouding with fear and hate. “I don’t really want to talk about it.”

Matt put his hand on her shoulder. “Please? It won’t hurt to talk about it.”

Julia walked over to his car and lay down on the hood. “It’s a really long story. It may take a while. I wouldn’t want to keep your friends waiting.”

“Well, we’ve got a good hour,” Matt said, looking at the sun to determine the time. He copied Julia’s movements and lay next to her looking at the sky. “So talk.”

“Well…” Julia began. “I was raped…by my father…”
