Chapter One
As you shuffle aboard the bus, you wonder if, finally, this year will be different. Of course, you wonder this every year, but this time...well, it's different. Your mom said to you just this morning "Claire, I promise that this year will be different...I'm going to clean myself up, and I've even started looking for a job!" Grinning, you answered her with your standard "That's great Mom. I'm glad to hear it." Deep down, you know it will never last...it never does.
"Finding a seat on this damned bus is always hard, but this is absolutely ridiculous!" you think to yourself. No one wants to scoot over; no one wants to sit by "that awful Claire Reidman." "Well, that's what I get. I girl from the 'wrong' side of town at a stuck-up private school." you think to yourself glumly as you sling your backpack down into the only empty seat. You wish that Grandmother would seriously think about letting you switch to a public school, but you know that will never happen. Ever since your dad left when you were 9, your brusque, business-like Grandmother has been the one taking care of your education, making sure that "When Alec comes back, he has a daughter he can be proud of." Obviously, your Grandmother is still in denial that her darling son is coming home. "Even if he did, would I recognize him? Would he recognize me?" you ask yourself for the millionth time. As you sink off into your reverie about your father, the bus suddenly shudders to a halt, jerking you from your thoughts...taking a deep breath, you prepare yourself for the jeering and taunts that are sure to come the moment you step off of the bus.
