Life Can Be Cruel... [Chapter 3]

Chapter 3
“What? How? They weren’t even in the same country though! No, they can’t be dead, you must be mistaken. You have the wrong person.” I tried to convince him and myself. My parents couldn’t be dead, no matter what, even if I hardly saw them. They were still my parents and I loved them.
“I’m sorry, but they are dead.” The police officer wouldn’t let me believe that they were okay.
There was a chair behind me and I fell into in, “But how?” I whispered.
“Well... Your mother. She was killed in a car accident. She was in England when it happened. And your father… He was hit my a car while he was walking out of a café, in France.”
I sat there, unable to form words, trying to understand everything.
“You can go back to class if you want, though I couldn’t imagine you wanting to do that, so I could drive you home.
“I can drive myself, I have a car.”
“Yeah, but you’re in no condition to drive, you’re still in shock.”
“Okay… I’ll just go grab the rest of my stuff.”
I got up and left the office. I felt like a robot, I didn’t even realize I had walked down the hallway to my locker, until I was standing right in front of it. I opened my locker, and that’s when it finally reacted.
I slid down the wall to the ground, pulled my knees up to my chest and just started crying.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I must have been sitting there for only a few minutes, but it felt like hours, when someone sat down in front of me, “Amber? What’s wrong? Are you okay?” The voice was filled with concern.
I looked up to see who could be bothering me. It was Josh. “Does it look like I’m okay?!” I snapped.
“You’re right, that was a stupid question. What’s wrong?” He tried again.
“Just leave me alone.”
“Not until you tell me what’s wrong.”
“Why do you even care?”
He thought about it for a second, “I don’t know, I just do.”
I didn’t say anything and he didn’t move an inch. Finally I said, “Fine, I just found out that my parents died.”
I didn’t realize that I had started crying harder until he pulled me unto a hug. “I’m so sorry.”
That’s all he said, he didn’t try to tell me that everything would be okay or any nonsense like that. I was glad, because how could everything be okay when my parent had just died?
I had almost stopped crying when I heard someone cough. We both looked up, it was the police officer, “I just came to see what was taking you so long.”
“Sorry.” I said, drying my face with my sleeve.
“Don’t be.”
I got up and grabbed a few things from my locker. “So I guess I’ll see you later?” Josh asked.
“Uh… yeah. Just don’t tell anyone anything about… you know.” I couldn’t bear to say my parents without breaking out in tears again.
But he understood, “Of course.”
“Thanks.” I tried to make a smile, but it must have looked pretty pathetic.
The police officer led me out the door through the main doors. No doubt there’d be some nasty rumors spread, but right now I didn’t care about that. I mean really, who would if they were in my shoes?
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
*JOSH’S POINT OF VIEW*
God, this class was so boring. Amber wasn’t even in here. I know, you’re probably going to say, but you just met her, how can you like her already? But I don’t know, there’s just something about her that I like. I don’t know what it is yet, but I hope to find out soon.
After another 5 minutes of listening to the teacher ramble about something I raised my hand.
“Yes Josh?”
“Can I go to the bathroom?”
“Sure, just sign out.”
Thank God. I signed out, but when I left the door I didn’t head towards the bathroom, I went the opposite way. As I was walking down the hallway, I saw a body curled up against the wall. It kind of looked like Amber’s beautiful strawberry blonde hair so I went up to the figure and sat down in front of it. “Amber? What’s wrong? Are you okay?”
She picked her head up, her green eyes, almost like emeralds, filled with tears. “Does it look like I’m okay?!”
Well I guess not… “You’re right, that was a dumb question. What’s wrong?”
“Just leave me alone.”
I couldn’t leave her alone though, she was obviously hurt. “Not until you tell me what’s wrong.”
“Why do you even care?”
Well I couldn’t tell her, ‘because I like you’; even I know that that’d be a little creepy. I tried thinking of a better excuse, “I don’t know, I just do.” Wow, great excuse looser…
She didn’t say anything after that, but I wasn’t going to give up so easily.
Finally she said, “Fine, I just found out that my parents died.” And she started crying harder.
That’s awful. I could relate, my mom died giving birth to me, but then again I never knew her in the first place, and I still have my dad. I pulled her to me and hugged her, “I’m so sorry.” I wasn’t going to bother telling her that everything’s going to be okay, I hated it when people told you that when obviously it’s not.
Someone coughed, and we both turned to look who it was, it was a police officer, “I just came to see what was taking you so long.”
“Sorry.” Amber said, she got up from my hug and grabbed a few things from her locker.
“Don’t be.” The police officer said. So he must have been the one to come here and tell her the news…
“So I guess I’ll see you later?” I didn’t know what else to say to her.
“Uh… yeah. Just don’t tell anyone anything about… you know.”
Of course she wouldn’t want me to tell anyone about her parents, I wouldn’t have said anything even if she didn’t ask. “Of course.”
“Thanks.” She tried smiling, and it didn’t work. If her parents hadn’t just died, I might have laughed at her attempt. So I watched as the police officer led her down the hallway.
I guess I have to go back to class….
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
*AMBER’S POINT OF VIEW*
The police officer drove me home and as soon as I stepped out of the car Maria was there pulling me into a bone crushing hug.
“Maria, can’t breath.” I managed to gasp.
“Sorry dear.” She loosened her grip, but didn’t let go of me. I was glad, I felt safe and at home in her arms.
She thanked the police officer and he said he had to go, but he’d be in touch.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Maria gave me a ton of blankets and made me some chicken noodle soup. I sat in the living room playing with my food; I was in no mood to eat. The door bell rang and Maria ran to get it. I followed into the hallway curious to see who it was seeing as no one besides my friends usually came by.
When she opened the door there was a police officer. “May I help you?” Maria asked him.
I was wondering why he was here when he said, “I’m sorry, but I need to tell you that Mr. and Mrs. Rose have died.”
“Of course, we already know that, that’s why they sent the other officer to tell us.”
The police officer standing in our doorway looked really confused, “No one else knows besides me and the chief, we just found out, no one else was sent here to tell you ma’am.”
So, I threw Josh's point of view in there, tell me what you think. don't forget to comment and vote :] xxx
