I woke up just as the sun was setting. I hated the sun for making me nocturnal. Because if I went outside while the sun was up, not good. I would get burned by it. Well not burned, that’s just what we call it, but it’s really just the sun weakening us and after a while of sun I could die. It’s kind of like being dehydrated I guess, I’m not sure though.

But anyways, back to the story. I woke up just as the sun was setting. The sun disappearing behind the horizon and the different colors, it was the best thing about the sun, I had to admit. Perfect timing! I climbed out of my freezer. And no we do not sleep in coffens.

After climbing out of my freezer I headed for the door passing by a mirror on my way. Just what I thought, my eyes are black. (Black eyes mean vampires are thirsty)But I was headed out to eat anyways. So I ran out of the house I was staying at for the week. I love running it’s great. You go so fast. Humans can’t even see you.

While I ran to the nearest village I thought of the type of person I wanted to eat…Probably a women. They’re easier to lure and they taste better than men. I don’t know why, must be something with living in Ireland.

But I was thinking about moving. Maybe after I eat I’ll head somewhere else…Maybe America! America sounds like a good place to visit, I haven’t been there in a few decades…

I ran into the village and slowed down to a human pace. About half a mile away there were footsteps. No, that was not what I wanted, it was a male. A little farther there were some other steps. Mmm… that person smelled good. I could taste the venom in my mouth now. I ran toward the lady and stopped in the shadows. When I stepped out she stopped in her tracks. I was about to say hello in my most gentle voice, I used it when I wanted my way from a human. But maybe I should use a scary voice so she runs away… ”Hello,” I said in my most scary voice. That did it. As soon as she heard my voice she turned around and started running.

I started out slower than human, make her think she has a chance. Then I gained speed once she looked behind her. I caught up with her in no time at all. When I bit her, my teeth are so strong it’s like cutting through butter (no we do not have fangs). She screamed. It wasn’t a very loud scream, no one would hear her. After a few seconds her scream was cut off with a gurgle. Once I finished I threw her body in the corner of the street.

I ran back to my house and grabbed my money, and put it in a backpack. I grabbed a few sets of clothes and threw them in there too. I threw the backpack over my shoulder and at the same second I was running off to America.

A few hours before sunrise I was in New York City. This looks like a good place to stay for a few weeks. Then maybe some other place here in America after that or Canada.

I walked around one of the uglier streets of New York City looking for a place to stay. After a few miles I found a dilapidated apartment building. No one lived there. It looked like it was just a building that no one knew what to do with.

I opened the front door; no one was going to lock it when it was so dilapidated. It looked like it was leaning to the left and there were a few broken windows. The cream colored paint was chipping.

I walked in the apartment building and went to the top apartment. I walked in. Yes, this would be a good place to stay in. I threw my backpack in the corner of a room. Hmm… I’ll need another freezer to sleep in…

The room looked just as bad as the outside of the house. Half of the wall paper boarder was hanging off the wall. And the blue paint was chipping.

There was a cracked mirror on the far wall. I could see my eyes were blood red now. I should be good for about 3 days before I needed to hunt. But tonight I would hunt just because. While I was thinking I heard the bottom door open and someone called, “Who’s in here?” It was a worried voice. Kind of had a vampire sound, but at the same time different.

I walked down the stairs. I tried to avoid the steps with holes in them, not that it would hurt me, but I didn’t want to hurt the house to much. And pieces of the railing were missing. “Who are you?” I asked. When I got down there as soon as I saw him I could see he was a vampire, he was just as pale as me. Vampires’ skin is pale white. But there was something off about him. His eyes were gold…How weird.

“Why are you in my place?” He demanded, I could tell that he knew I was a vampire too.

“I need a place for a few weeks so I decided I liked this place. Especially the top room.”

“Well, you can have the top room if you want.” His voice was starting to sound nice. How odd. “By the way my name is Chris.”

“If you’re just going offer it I don’t think I want to stay here.” I said. What was he some kind of good vampire? Jeez this kid needs some help. I ran upstairs to get my backpack. He followed me. “What do you want?!” I asked harshly.

“Well, I was wondering if you wanted to hang out. Not many other vampires come here in New York City. “
“No. I travel alone; I don’t hang out. Especially with others.”

I ran out the door, but a second later I ran back in. Chris was just staring at me.

“Fine I’ll stay for the day, but it’s only cause the sun already starting rising. But as soon as the sun sets I’m out. There is one rule though, leave me alone.”

“You can’t tell me what to do!” Chris said.

“I’m older then you, so yea I can” I looked him over. “I bet you’re barley 50 years old.”

“53 actually.” He mumbled.

I walked back up stairs and threw my backpack into the same corner as before. I was thinking about this kid Chris, his gold eyes. “Hey, why are your eyes gold?” I asked no louder than as if he was standing right next to me.

He ran into my room. “I don’t drink human blood. I drink animal’s blood. And animal blood makes your eyes gold.”

“Why would you do that?”

“I don’t want to drink human blood, that makes me a monster. I don’t want to be like that.”

“That’s dumb, to resist what you are.”

“No it’s not. I don’t want to be bad so I’m going to be good.”

I opened the window in the room. Then I went in the corner to lie down and try to fall asleep. I mean it’s no freezer. But the winter cold was better than nothing. I pretended to be sleeping or whatever it is that we do. I didn’t feel like talking to this kid anymore. He’d probably start to think I actually wanted to be friends or whatever.

I could feel Chris’s stair for a few seconds, but then he left. Thank god. I really couldn’t fall asleep without my freezer, but it was nice just to day dream all the same. After a while I got up and went down stairs. I saw a freezer in one of the rooms, no one was using it, so I looked around then hopped in.

Tap tap tap. That’s weird, vampires don’t dream and yet I’m hearing some taping noise…I opened my eyes. Oh. It was Chris. I opened the lid.

“What do you want?” I snapped.

“Sorry to wake you, but...uh…you mind? It’s my freezer and I’d like to take a nap.”

“Oh, sorry.”

I rolled over and kicked the lid shut. Chris mumbled something that sounded like, fine I’ll sleep in a snow bank, jeez, next he’s going to want the clothes off my back.

A few hours later I woke to some more tapping. “Jesus! What do you want now?!”

“No need to suck my blood, I just figured you’d like to know that the sun was setting.”

“Ha-ha, funny. Don’t suck my blood” I mocked. Then I jumped out of my-er his, freezer. I walked out the door, but he was following me. “What do you want?”

“Oh. I was just wondering what you were going to do…” Chris said.

“Well dad, I’m going to go get something to eat.” I said dad with a sour tone. I don’t need to explain myself to anyone.

He stared at me funny.

“What?” I asked.

“You’re going to…go eat… a human…?” He whispered

“Yeah, not everyone is weird like you and drinks animal blood.”

He kept staring at me as I walked away. Then he followed me. “I think you should try drinking animal blood. I mean it could be like a challenge or whatever. Then you could decide which you like better.”

“If I do will you shut up and leave me alone?!” I’d do anything if I could get this kid to leave me alone.

“Yes, scouts honor.”

I rolled my eyes, “Fine!” I almost shuddered at the thought, but stopped myself.

We ran off to another town, one that would have animals. He didn’t talk to me the whole way. Probably trying to prove to me that he isn’t always a pain in the butt. Once we were in the forest I listened for something to eat. A little farther away I could smell something. A bear I think. Ha! Imagine the bears face when it figured out I was stronger than it.

I ran to the bear and tackled it. Boy way he surprised. He kept hitting me with its paws and tried to bite me a few times. Then after a while I decided it was getting boring so I bit him.

It actually wasn’t as bad as it sounded. I mean it didn’t quench my thirst as much as human blood, but I felt… I don’t know. Nicer maybe.

“So, which way do you like better?” Chris interrupted my train of though.

“I don’t know…”

“Well I guess it’s better than saying human blood. Are you going to stick with animal blood?”

“I don’t know maybe for a few more weeks then I’ll decide…”

“Awesome!”

We ran back, and he didn’t stop talking this time. He probably felt my better mood, so figured it would be okay to talk. In a way it almost was. It shocked me.

A few days later we went out again. I wrestled with a mountain lion this time. After that one I made a decision. I would stick to animal blood. I just felt a lot more upbeat, optimistic maybe, after having animal blood. And I had to admit I liked the gold eyes better than blood red. When I reluctantly told Chris he looked like a kid who had just opened the best present ever on Christmas. But I couldn’t be mad at him, I was actually starting to get attached to him.

At nights we would go to clubs. Hang with the humans. It was really weird, them not noticing how scary we could be. I mean they pretty much kept away from us, but they didn’t run screaming every time they saw us. I wasn’t used to that, maybe it was something with the different eye color. I have to admit blood red eyes are pretty creepy when I think about them now.

As weeks went on I decided to stick around for maybe a month or two. It didn’t really matter. About a month after I decided to go “vegetarian” some other vampires came to visit.

One day Chris and I were talking about me. I was telling that I was born November 4th 1826 in Paris, France which makes me 182 years old. Although I look more like a 20 year old who could use a day at the beach.

While we were talking some vampires walking in our apartment, the sun was just rising when two people walked into our apartment.  “Hey, buddy ol’ Cole!” I heard someone say my name.

“Who’s there?”

“Don’t you remember me?” Disappointment colored his tone. It’s your old friend Jamar and I brought Niabi!”

I groaned. This was the last thing I needed. I tried to flatten my hair so I could try to hide my eyes before he reached me. “What do you want?” I demanded.

“What? We need a reason to visit a friend.”

“Oh, come on, we were never friends.”

He had reached me by now. He was just as tall and muscular as he was like I remember, but his hair was more black than brown now. But he also had a new travel companion. Niabi was a small woman with light blonde hair, it was almost white. “Whoa Cole! Those are some creepy eyes! Why are they gold?” He was shocked and in awe at the same time.

Niabi whispered something to him. “What?! You drink animal blood now?!” Jamar asked shocked.

“It just has a better taste. You should try it sometime.” Chris said.

“Butt out, I wasn’t talking to you kid!” Jamar yelled at Chris harshly.

“Hey, back off Jamar.” I said.

“Oh, you have gone soft, the Cole I remember never stuck up for anyone, not even me.”

“Oh, you know you deserved it after what you did.”

Niabi and Chris were just staring at us, they had no clue what we were talking about. I walked up to Jamar and pulled him to the door, no way this thing was staying here. I opened the door I shoved him out. Niabi hovered in the door. I could tell she was thinking it was getting sunny but Jamar was outside. Finally she jumped outside and helped Jamar up. Jamar leaped at me, but I punched him as hard as I could.

He fell to the ground then got back up and grabbed Niabi and walked away. “Fine, I can see that we’re no longer friends.”

Jamar said before he and Niabi ran off as fast as they could before the sun rose fully.

“Good riddance!”I said.

Chris didn’t say anything. I closed the door and we went back to our previous discussion. Nothing really happened after that, we never heard from them again that’s for sure.

Though we did end up moving after a few months. I had gotten bored of the night life so we decided, after hearing about this book Twilight (by Stephenie Meyer) we would check out Forks, Washington.
