Premonitions

Fiction Created on 3-27-08 Views(47) Story Rating G

It came out of no where, and was completely unexpected. Except to Kasey. Kasey knew that the tragic event would happen. The car swerved striking a tree. Smoke escaped from the hood. Inside her father lay limp over the steering wheel, blood trickling from his forehead. She instantly woke, scared of the nightmare that had just played in her mind. But soon a seriously bad nightmare became harsh reality.

She had never told anyone about what she saw in her mind before her father's death. No one would believe her. They would just think she was making it up. But three years later, when she is eight years old and still haunted by the memory of her father, she finally tells someone what happened.

Her brother, Michael who was ten at the time, looked at his sister in bewilderment. His dark eyes had widened.

"You believe me, don't you?" she had asked.

He nodded his head, not trusting his voice. At least someone had believed her way back then.

Now she is sixteen and visions don't come over her anymore. Maybe her "vision" wasn't actually a vision, just a coincidence of events. But when she sees a new, horrifying image in her mind's eye, premonitions aren't just pretend anymore.

The sun had made a red glowing contrast among the mid-summer evening sky. Kasey sat on the step of her front porch, while her neighbor and best friend Gabriel lay in the grass, her thoughts wandering beyond the sky.

"You're awfully quiet," Kasey told her friend, noticing she wasn't her upbeat, talkative self.

"I'm just thinking," replied Gabriel, her eyes still fixed on the glowing clouds.

"About that new kid? Oh what's his name?"

Gabriel sat up and looked at Kasey. "Uh, his name is Thomas, and no. That's not what I'm thinking about."

Kasey let out a laugh. "I'm sorry. What's on your mind?"

"Do you ever feel like someone is just waiting to get back at you? Like someone is just waiting for the perfect moment to get revenge on you?"

Kasey's expression grew serious. "Do you think someone is seeking revenge on you?

"Maybe."

"Who? Why?"

"Don't worry about it," Gabriel said as she stood and dusted off the back of her shorts. "I'd better be getting home. See you in the morning."

"Okay, then. See you tomorrow."

Kasey watched her friend exit the yard through the gate. She stayed outside on her porch until the bites of thirsty mosquitoes forced her to go inside.

"You okay?"

Kasey stopped and looked at her brother Michael stretched out on the couch in front of the television.

"Yeah, I'm fine."

"You don't look fine," he challenged.

"I'm tired, that's all."

Without another word, she went up the stairs to her room. She lay on her bed, staring at the textures in the ceiling. She thought about what Gabriel had asked earlier. Was her friend in trouble?

All through her sleep, Kasey tossed and turned. The nightmare going through her mind made it simply impossible for her to sleep peacefully. Suddenly she woke, with a cold sweat streaming from her forehead. The nightmare included Gabriel, tied up in the back of a van. She couldn't make out the other person who was in the dream. All she could make out was Gabriel and the tears that stained her face.

Kasey lay in bed until the morning sun peeked through the blinds and lacey curtains of her bedroom. She hurried out of bed and rushed to get to the shower before Michael had a chance to. She dressed quickly then went downstairs to the kitchen and wolfed down a bowl of cereal.

"Whoa, slow it down," Michael said as he walked into the kitchen.

"What? I'm hungry."

"Mhm..."

Kasey looked at her brother annoyed. "Just shut up."

"Sorry!" he said sarcastically. "You're in a hurry this morning."

"I just have to get a project done this morning, so I have to get going a bit early."

Michael looked at her as she ate. "You sure your okay?"

"Peachy," she said, avoiding eye contact. "Gotta go."

She grabbed her backpack and ran out of the kitchen and quickly made her way out of the front door. She went next door and walked up the steps of the porch leading to the house. She knocked on the door hesitantly. The door opened and on the other side stood a middle aged woman with auburn hair and sparkling blue eyes. The same eyes as her friend's.

"Hello, Kasey!" the woman exclaimed, a smile spreading across her face. "Come in."

Kasey accepted the offer and made her way inside the bright house.

"Gaby will be down in a second."

"Okay, thank you, Mrs. Lawson."

"What are you doing here so early?" Gabriel asked as she walked down the stairs.

"I don't know. Just thought we could talk a bit."

Gabriel looked at her friend as if her were growing another head.

"Um, okay."

Kasey followed Gabriel out the front door.

"Have a nice day girls," Gabriel's mom called behind them.

"Thanks, Mom. We will," Gaby replied.

After they had made their way outside Gabriel finally spoke. "So what did you want to talk about?"

"About what you said last night."

"What did I say last night?"

"About people seeking revenge on others."

Gabriel stopped. "What about it?"

Kasey turned and looked at Gabriel. She now seemed scared and anxious. "Is someone trying to get you back for something?"

Gabriel looked down at her feet. When she didn't answer, Kasey asked again. "Is some one after you. Gaby?"

With her eyes still glued to the ground, she answered Kasey's question in a breathy whisper. "Maybe."

She was so quiet Kasey had to strain to hear her voice.

"Who?" Kasey asked, her heart pounding.

"I don't know." Gabriel said, walking ahead of her friend.

"Gaby," Kasey said as she ran up beside her friend and caught her shoulder, but she jerked away.

"Let's not talk about this here."

"But, Gaby,"

"Please!" she interrupted. "Not here."

They walked quietly the rest of the way. When they arrived at school, they went to their lockers and collected their supplies for the day.

"If your mad at me, I'm sorry." Kasey offered.

"No, I'm not mad. Its just, I'd rather not talk about that right now."

"Will you tell me when your ready?"

"Why are you even worried about this?"

Kasey looked at her friend puzzled.

"Because your my best friend and its my job to worry about you."

"Well, don't get so caught up in it, alright?"

Kasey didn't know what to say, but it didn't matter. Gabriel had already made her way down the hall to her first period class. She watched her friend slowly disappear into the crowd of students. Finally she turned and made her way to class.

She hadn't seen Gabriel for the rest of the day, and it didn't seems worth it to look for her now as the bell rang and students emptied out of the classrooms into the halls.

Kasey made her way home alone. Why wouldn't Gabriel tell her anything?

As she approached her house and went to the gate, she spotted Gabriel's mother watering her garden.

"Did Gaby walk home alone?" she asked the woman.

Gabriel's mom turned, startled. "Yes."

"Oh."

Kasey continued up the front porch steps but stopped when Gabriel's mom asked, "Is everything okay between the two of you?"

"Yeah, I think so. We just had a misunderstanding today."

Without waiting for her to reply, Kasey opened the front door to her house and walked in.

"Where's, Mom?" she asked as she walked into the kitchen and saw Michael preparing supper.

"She's working late tonight. She left a note on the fridge telling me to get dinner started."

"Ugh!" Why would she do that? She knows you can't cook!" Kasey teased.

"Haha, yea. Shut it."

Kasey giggled. "Sorry."

But suddenly her thoughts shifted back to Gabriel.

"Has Gaby been weird lately to you?" she asked her brother who had just finished draining a pot of pasta.

"Gaby's always weird to me, but if you mean by her not talking as much as usual, I wouldn't call that weird, I'd call it a miracle."

"Oh, Michael just shut up and be serious for a moment please."

"Fine. She has been acting like something's bothering her."

"Yea."

There was a long silence between them.

"I'm going to go upstairs and get to work on this homework. Call me when dinner is ready...or whatever you call that."

Michael let out a laugh. "Your lucky I don't poison your half."

"You wouldn't do that to me. I'm your favorite sister," she said, flipping her hair.

"Only because your my only sister."

"All the more reason to keep me."

"Yeah, but I have forgotten what being an only child feels like. I might have to try it out again."

Kasey punched her brother playfully in his arm. "Whatever. You know you love me."

"Yep, yep. Now go do your homework before I change my mind about that.
