Until Angels Close My Eyes 6
|
"All ready to go?" his uncle asked.
"Yep. Let's go."
They walked out the door and his uncle loaded his bags into the car. They drove to the airport and Adam said his goodbyes to his uncle.
"Thanks for putting up with me." he said as he hugged him.
"Anytime."
Adam's flight was called, and he turned to board the plane.
"Take care," his uncle called after him.
Adam turned and smiled. "You too."
The flight back home seemed longer than his flight to California. He slept most of the time. He couldn't wait to be home. He missed the feeling of it. Even the painful heart crushing feelings he felt when he thought of Lexi. But that wasn't going to change no matter where he was. He still missed her, and felt as if he always would. But he felt more like he could try to live his life, without feeling grounded. Lexi would have wanted him to be happy. She said so herself. He knew that if he was happy, then so was she.
After a few long hours, the plane landed. Adam was welcomed by his parents, and he had never been so happy to see them.
"How was your trip?" his mother asked while hugging him.
"It was good, Mom." he tried to smile, to comfort her. "It was all good."
They drove home and Adam went up to his room and unpacked everything. Then he went downstairs and had dinner with his family. They asked him what he had done while he was there. Adam didn't give them too much details, just the basics.
"Sounds like you had a nice time," his father said.
"Yea, I did." He looked at both of his parents. "Thanks for letting me go. And thanks for being here for me.
I'm sorry I lost it a few times with you, but you have to understand where I'm coming from too."
"We do, Son. And we apologize for pushing you to do things you weren't ready to do."
They finished eating, and Adam helped cleaned up.
"I'm sure your tired from your flight. Why don't you go on to bed, I can handle the rest of this," his mother said.
He did as his mother suggested and went to his room. It felt good to be in his own bed. He looked around his room, admiring every little detail. Some of the things in his room were gifts from Lexi, and thats what made it more comfortable for him to be there. A piece of her was there as well. He turned off his lamp and fell asleep instantly.
"Mom, I'm going out," Adam said one morning.
"Don't be gone long," his mother replied.
"I won't, this wont take very long."
He walked out the house and got into his car. He drove a good distance before he arrived at the cemetery where Lexi was buried. He made his way through the maze of headstones, until he came across hers. He stood there for a moment, praying silently to himself.
"Hey."
Adam turned to find Katrina walking towards him.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" he asked smiling.
"Well I ran into your uncle and he told me you came home a few days ago. He gave me your address, and I got on a plane. I went by your house and your mother told me I would find you here."
Adam starred at her smiling.
She smiled back. "Why didn't you ever tell me about Lexi?"
Adam's smile faded. He was quiet for a moment. "It wasn't important."
"Why not?"
Adam sighed. "I was almost happy again, I didn't want to risk that by talking about it.
It wouldn't have mattered anyway."
"It would have explained a few things."
Adam nodded his head, then looked back at her. "I think Lexi sent you to me."
Katrina smiled. "Well if she did, then I thank her very much."
There was a silence between them.
"She was very lucky to have you, Adam. Someone who cared about her so much, and who would do anything for her.
Even when she's gone, you still want to make her happy."
"It's the least I can do. She gave me the happiest years of my life." He paused. "...And the saddest."
A tear slid down his cheek, and Katrina wiped it from his face.
"Do you want me to stay, or is this something you need to be alone for?"
"No, stay. I just came to tell her happy birthday."
He knelt down and touched Lexi's headstone. "Happy birthday, sweetheart. I miss you."
He tried to fight his tears. Finally he whispered, "I'll love you until angels close my eyes."
He bowed his head and tears blinded him.
Katrina walked closer to him and placed her hand on his shoulder. Softly she said, "Your going to make it Adam. Your going to make it just fine."
This is the last story. There will be an epilouge following it. Thanks to all that have read it, and I hope you all enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it.
