Lexi's Goodbye

Until Angels Close My Eyes 4

Short Created on 8-11-07 Views(123) Story Rating G

Adam woke up the next morning to his uncle calling his name. He got out of bed, and walked to the kitchen. There he saw his uncle hanging up the phone.

He figured it had been his mother on the phone. "What did she want?" he asked as he crossed his arms.

"She wanted to tell you that Lexi's mom had something for you."

Adam stood straighter. "Something like what?"
"They were going through her things. They finally decided to go ahead and put her things in storage."

Adam felt his heart sink. They kept Lexi's room intact and now that they were putting it away, it made Lexi's death even more real.

His uncle continued, "They came across a note telling them to look in her diary."

"What did they find?" Adam asked anxiously.

"Her last diary entry, is for you, Adam."
Adam's heart quickened. "What did it say?"

"She didn't say. But they're sending the entry through the mail."

It would be a few days before he got it. He couldn't wait. He wanted to know what she had said in the entry.

A couple of days passed and Adam still hadn't gotten the entry. "Do you think it could have gotten lost?"

His uncle laughed to himself. "Adam, it'll come. Don't worry."

But Adam couldn't do anything except worry. And of course wait. The wait seemed like forever, and he couldn't take it much longer.

"Why don't you go out and do something to keep you busy," his uncle suggested.

Adam sighed. He needed to get out of the house. "Come with me, let's get something to eat."

"Alright, just give me a second."

They left the house and went to a little casual dining restaurant close to the beach. Adam thought it would take his mind off of Lexi's diary entry for a while, but it only made him more anxious. But he tried not to let it show. "You sure aren't eating much."

His uncle's comment interrupted his thoughts. "I'm not as hungry as I thought."

"Still thinking about the entry, huh?"

Adam nodded his head.

"It will be here, I promise. Maybe tomorrow."

"Yea, tomorrow."

But Adam couldn't wait until tomorrow. He wanted to have her diary entry in his hand now. At this very moment.

"I'm going to go outside for a moment," Adam said as he stood up.

"Okay," his uncle replied.

Adam went and sat outside of the restaurant. The air was refreshing to him, and the sun bathed his skin.
He looked up when he heard a familiar voice.

Katrina.

But she hadn't noticed him yet. She was making her way into the restaurant along with a few more friends of hers. Some of them Adam recognized from the party.

Before Katrina entered the restaurant, she noticed Adam.

"Hi, Katrina," he said, offering a smile.

"Hi."

She turned to her friends and told them she would be there in a minute. She sat next to Adam.

"I'm sorry about what happened at the party," she said shyly.

Adam sighed. "Yea, I'm sorry too."

"You shouldn't be the one thats sorry. You didn't do anything."

Adam looked at her. "I hurt you by leaving."

"Oh, its okay. I mean I scared you away."

Adam laughed. "I just wasn't prepared for that."

Katina smiled, "Yea, I don't know why I did it. But I'm sorry."

Adam stood, "Eh, don't be." He waited for Katrina's response but she didn't say another word.

"I'm going back inside," Adam said, still standing in front of her.

"Yea, me too." She stood and followed Adam into the restaurant. Before Adam went back to the table with his uncle, Katrina said, "Adam, once again, I'm sorry."

Adam turned to her and said, "You can make it up to me. Lets hang out some time."

Katrina smiled. "Okay, you have my address. Stop by anytime."

Adam smiled back at her, then turned and walked back to his table. His uncle had finished his meal and they headed back home.

The next morning, Adam got up and went to the kitchen. He asked his uncle if the mail had come.

"No not yet, but it should be shortly."

Adam prayed that the entry would come today. He couldn't wait any longer.

He turned and went back to his room. He got himself ready for the day. Suddenly his uncle called him. Adam quickly went to see what his uncle wanted.

He handed him and envelope with his name on it. Adam took it and starred at it for the longest time.

"Well, aren't you going to open it?" his uncle was just as curious to know what was written as he was.

Adam looked at his uncle, then back at the envelope. He tore it open, and pulled out the entry. He wanted to read it where he was alone, so he headed back up to his room and laid on the bed. He unfolded the paper. In Lexi's elegant writing, she had written....

This is my last diary entry, and it belongs to Adam. So Mom and Dad, when you find this, make sure he gets it.

It won't be much longer before the cancer wins this. So, I must write this now. We all have to leave sometime. My time has just come a little early. I don't want anyone to be sad for me. Especially you, Adam. I love you, and when I look down at you from heaven I don't want to see you crying. It will hurt me too much.

So this is why I'm writing this. To tell you that you shouldn't feel pain or sadness when you think about me. You should live your life the way you would have, as if this never happened. Don't feel like you have to suffer, just because I have.

And don't feel as though you can't do other things. I know you loved me, Adam. I know that you would do anything for me, no matter what it took. Don't feel as though you can't move on. I want you to be happy. Date other girls, hang with your friends. Do what you should be doing. When I look down at you, I want you to be smiling, and living your life the way you should. Don't feel like you can't. I'm still with you. And I will always be with you. I want you to have fun. I want you to do everything you've always wanted to do. And if you don't do those things, It'll hurt me because I'll feel like I've held you back.

I want the best for you, Adam. So go and do whats best for you.

Remember I'll be watching.

-Lexi

Adam read the entry over and over. No only because he found he couldn't put it down, but because it was one more piece of Lexi he couldn't lose. Each time he read it, tears formed in his eyes. He kept himself in his room that night, reading the entry, looking at Lexi's photo, and just trying to take it all in. Lexi had answered him. She had told him that what happened at the party was okay with her.

It became late, and Adam became tired. He prepared himself for bed, and went to say goodnight to his uncle.

"I hope her diary entry helped you," his uncle told him.

"It did. She always knew how to make things better."

"I'm glad."

Adam turned and walked back to his room. He read the entry one last time. Then he reached to turn of the lamp. But before he did, he looked straight into Lexi's eyes in the photograph. "Your amazing."
