Lexi's Goodbye

Until Angels Close My Eyes

Short Created on 8-7-07 Views(196) Story Rating G

Ever since Lexi's death, Adam felt an empty feeling inside. A emptiness that could never be filled.Lexi made him feel a certain way that nothing else could.

He still saw her smile from day to day. And her last words hummed in is ears. "I'll love you until angels close my eyes."

He feared going on in life without her. He felt guilty that he was still alive, and that she wasn't.He would have gladly taken her place. She was so sweet, and didn't deserve to die so young, he thought.

It's been a year since the loss and he still wasn't happy, and couldn't accept the fact he was here and she wasn't. Rarely did he hang out with friends. He dropped out of college. He wasn't the same anymore.

His days seemed never-ending, and he felt shut off from the world. Here he was, alone, and sad, and angry...just filled with emotions.

The world went by him. Everyone seemed so happy. But how could they be? He felt as if everyone should feel his pain. The girl he loved more than anything in this world was gone, and the world didn't care.

"Honey, maybe you should talk to someone. You still shouldn't be hurting this much," his mother told him one evening.

"Mom, talking to someone won't help. It won't bring her back." he said in an irritated tone. "All I want is for this nightmare to end."

"I understand you want her back, but she isn't coming back. I'll get you an appointment with a psychiatrist in the morning."

Adam jumped up from his seat furious.

"I don't need a psychiatrist, okay! I don't understand why you think sending me to some shrink will help."

"Honey, I'm just..."

Adam interrupted her.

"Stop it. I'm not crazy for wanting her back, stop acting like I am."

"Adam, just listen..."

"No, I'm done with listening to everyone saying I should be over it. It's not like I can forget everything.

Lexi is gone Mom, and I can't live with that."

Adam left the room and went upstairs. He needed a break from this. He needed to get away from everyone. Some place where it was less stressful. Where he could just think about everything.

He discussed with his Mom and Dad about going to California.

"Adam, thats a long way from home," his mother said.

"But, I'll be safe. I've already talked to Uncle Mike. He said I could stay with him while I'm there."

"Well, money. How do you expect to get enough money for a plane ticket?" his dad asked.

"Uncle Mike said he would pay for it. He said he'll take care of it all."

"Adam I don't see how this could help you."

"Mom, I just need some space. Lexi's memory is still here. Maybe I need to get away for a while and try to stop the pain."

Adam's mother finally gave in.

Two weeks passed and he was on his way to California.

He said goodbye to his parents, and got on he plane. The flight was long and tiring, but it was worth it. He had to do something to make things less overwhelming to him.

He finally arrived at the airport and met up with his Uncle.

Adam was relieved to see him. His uncle understood the pain he was going through, for he had lost his wife in a car accident 5 years ago.

They arrived at his uncles beach house, and Adam felt much more relaxed already.

"Go on, have a seat," his uncle offered as he sat himself down.

Adam sat on a chair across from his uncle. For a moment there was an awkward silence. Adam finally broke it.

"So, how have you been?" he asked.

"Oh, pretty good. Haven't been up to much lately, though."

"How are you, son."

Adam bowed his head and sat silently.

His uncle realized what a stupid question that was, so he quickly changed the subject.

"Well, how about we get you unpacked and settled in your room."

He followed after his uncle down a long hallway.

Then his uncle opened the door to his right.

Adam walked inside and put his bags down.

"Need some help unpacking?" his uncle asked.

"No, I think I've got it," Adam replied offering a smile.

"Alright then. If you need anything, I won't be too far."

His uncle left the room, and closed the door behind him.

Adam just stood there for a moment, looking around the room. He walked over to the window and saw an amazing view of the ocean. It was so beautiful. He thought Lexi would love to see such a sight. She had always wanted to go to a place like this. She once told him she could spend forever just looking out at the ocean.

Adam felt his eyes filling with tears and quickly looked away from the ocean's crashing waves.

He unzipped his suitcase and unpacked all of his clothes. He placed them in the drawers of the oak wood dresser. He reached into the bottom of the suitcase and took out a framed picture of him and Lexi, and set it on top of the nightstand neighboring the bed.

Finally all of his things were unpacked, so he relaxed and lay on the bed. He starred at the ceiling, trying to find patterns. He soon became bored with that and turned on his side. His eyes met with Lexi's in the photograph close by.

Her clear, crystal blue eyes reminded him of the ocean. He began to smile, for her smile was so contagious. But soon that smile faded. He remembered that never again could he stare into those gorgeous eyes and say, "I love you."

He tried to look away from the picture, but he was stuck.

He couldn't tear himself away.

He heard a knock on the door, and it made him jump.

"Come in," he said.

His uncle walked in. "Your mom is on the phone, she wanted to talk to you."

Adam rolled his eyes, got up off the bed and retrieved the phone from his uncle.

"Hey, Mom," he said trying to sound happy to hear from her.

"Hello, Son. I just wanted to make sure you made it okay."

"Yes, Mom, I made it just fine," he said irritated.

Why was she treating him like some child?

"Well, I want you to do somethings while your there."

There was a silence. Adam was waiting for her to go on, but she wouldn't speak.

"What things do you want me to do?" he asked impatiently.

His mother hesitated, then finally said, "Maybe you should get your mind off of Lexi and on other girls. Go on a few dates, have some fun."

Adam was furious. He couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"No way! That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. I'm not dating anyone, Mother! Lexi was my one and only, and my heart only belongs to her."

"Adam, stop."

"No, you stop. Stop trying to make me forget her. I can never forget her. I loved her, Mom. I wanted to marry that girl."

"Honey, you couldn't have really..."

"Go look in my closet. The shoe box way in the back. Look inside it.

Adam's mother, still on the phone, walked up to his son's room.

She went to the closet, and opened it.

She looked around until she found the box.

Inside she found pictures of Lexi and Adam. Some were from school functions, and from their prom.

"Adam there's nothing here but some..."

"Look under the photographs, Mom."

She did as Adam told her, and looked under the pictures.

Buried underneath was a small box. She set the shoe box down, and held the smaller box in her hand.

She opened it and inside was a platinum pre-set diamond ring.

He heard his mother gasp. "I told you. I loved her, and after college I planned on marrying her."

"Adam, where did you get this?"

"I bought it."

"Where did you get the money?"

"Birthday money, pay checks, even some of my friends helped me out."

"Adam, why didn't you ever tell me and your father?"

"Because you guys would have tried and stopped me. It's like you guys didn't want me and Lexi to be together.

You always seemed to get my mind off her and on something else. And even after she's gone, your doing the same thing."

"Adam, thats not true."

"The hell it isn't. I lost the one I cared about very much. My one and only, and your just like, 'Adam, get over it.'"

"You shouldn't be living your life around her anymore. Shes gone Adam, no matter how much you isolate yourself from the world, theres no bringing her back."

"Mom, just stop. I don't live my life around her, I live my life for her. You just don't understand and you never will."

Adam hung up the phone and soon it rang again. He let it ring.

Finally his uncle picked up, and offered Adam the phone. Adam just turned away.

"Do you need to talk?" his uncle asked before he left the room.

"What is it with people and talking? Talking won't bring her back. Just let me get some sleep please."

"Well, okay. But I'm just down the hall if you need something."

His uncle left and closed the door.

Adam changed into his shirt and boxers and got into bed. He lay there starring at the photo.

"I'll love you until angels close my eyes. I promise."

He turned off the lamp, and soon fell asleep.
