Lexi's Goodbye
|
Lexi Winstead. A young, beautiful, caring, and loving girl. To the eye she's perfect. The kind of girl everyone wants to be. But beyond, there is something terrible. A secret that she is not willing to tell.
At Westminister High, she's the new girl. And it's quite frightening to her. The wanting to fit in, wanting to be on everyone's good side, trying not to get lost finding all of her classes. It's a transition she was not ready for.
Luckily, she met a boy, named Adam Larkey. He gave her a smile that gave her a sense of protection, and it made her feel much more welcome. He offered to be her guide throughout the rest of the day, and she accepted the offer without any hestiation.
He helped her make routes to all of her classes, and showed her shortcuts. And it made things less overwhelming to her. They had lunch together and talked like they've known each other forever. And at that moment, Adam wasn't just a guide to her, he was her best friend.
Weeks passed and Lexi felt like she finally belonged. She had made other friends, but none of them could take the place of Adam. They always were together. They were inseparable. Lexi felt something for him that she never did for anyone else. But that was something she needed to keep to herself at the moment. But little did she know that Adam felt this same feeling, but he wasnt willing to tell her either.
A few months passed and the school year was coming to an end. And Lexi was relieved at how well things had gone for her. Adam had finally told her everything he felt for her...as did Lexi. So they began dating, and Lexi had never been so happy. Things were so much easier when he was around.
Sophmore year passed, junior year passed, and they had finally reached their senior year. And things for Lexi was perfect. Perfect, until she had a doctors appointment and found terrible news.
Finally, the day of their graduation came. Adam and Lexi were still together and happier than ever.
After all the celebrating with their friends and family, Lexi and Adam went somewhere, where it was only the two of them. They sat and talked for hours. It was getting late, and Lexi pulled out a note and handed it to Adam. She kissed him goodbye, then turned and walked away.
Adam waited until he was home to read the note. He went up to his room, layed on his bed and began to read what was on the piece of paper. It read...
Adam,
I love you with all my heart, so I must not keep this secret from you any longer. But before I tell you, I want to tell you that you are everything to me. Your my bestfriend, and have been for so long. The first day we met I felt like I've known you forever. And everyday I thank God for letting us meet. And I thank him for letting us be together.
But God has weird ways, and I don't understand why He would let us be together, only to tear us apart. I'm about to tell you something, I have never told anyone else...
I have cancer. Leukemia, actually. I was in remission for four years, but at my last doctor visit, they found that it was coming back.
Instead of going to college after the summer, I'm starting chemotherapy. And the reason I decide to tell you this now, is because the doctors say that fighthing it this time may be hard for me to do. But I promise I will fight. For you. I'm not ready to say goodbye to you yet, Adam. I will never be ready to say goodbye to you. I'll stay here with you as long as I possibly can.
Don't worry about me, go to college. Live your life, and I'll fight for mine. I love you so much. More than you could ever know.
With that, Adam was in tears. He turned off his light and just layed in the darkness. Finally, he went to sleep, with the note still in hand.
Summer passed by and Adam prepared to himself for his new journey. He decided to go to a Community College close to home so he could be with Lexi as much as possible. He took her to her chemotherapy sessions when he wasn't busy with his college work. And every moment he spent with her he cherished, and stared at her trying to keep the images in his mind. He was trying to make memories of her, just incase something were to happen.
He saw what the chemo was doing to her. She had lost quite a bit of weight and had lost most of her long brown hair. Dark circles formed under her once bright, cheerful, blue eyes.
When the two of them were alone, Lexi told him that her time to leave may be sooner than she thought. She became weaker and weaker, and she felt as though there was no use anymore. Adam was afraid to think about losing her, so he quickly changed the subject. But Lexi wouldn't stop. She kept saying that her days were numbered, and Adam couldn't bare it. He didn't want her to think about losing her life. So without thought, he quickly left the room. Silently he cried. And so did Lexi.
Months passed, and Lexi got worse and worse. At this point, her long brown locks of hair were gone from her head. Her clothes hung from her. And she slept all the time. Sometimes Adam came to sit with her, and she didn't even notice he was there.
One afternoon, she told her parents that she didn't want to stay in the hospital. She told them, that if she were to die, she rather die at home.
So she was sent home, and watched. By her parents, an organization called Hospice, and by Adam.
Adam stayed with her for hours, and would have stayed longer, but Lexi's parents insisted that he should go home and get some rest. One night, before Adam left, he bent down and kissed her. After, she whispered to him, "I will love you, until angels close my eyes." Her speech was slurred, but Adam heard her perfectly. And he tried to fight his tears. He kissed her again, and left before the tears streamed down his face.
That night, her mom checked on her. She found she wasn't breathing. She quickly called an ambulance, only to hear that it was too late, and nothing could be done to revive her.
They called Adam, and he jumped out of bed and rushed over. He saw his girlfriend's lifeless body, and hurried over to her. He held her so close and rocked her as he cried. The girl that he wanted to spend forever with, was now gone.
It was the day of her funeral and Adam was stiff. He hardly listened to what was said at the service. All that played in his mind was her last words to him. He played them over and over in his head.
Finally it was time to lay her to rest. Adam watched as they lowered the coffin into the Earth. He waited until everyone was gone and read her a poem he had written. Afterwards he layed the poem, along with a single red rose on her grave.
Before he turned to leave he whispered, "I'll love you until angels close my eyes, Lexi."
Several months passed, and Adam still hated awaking up every morning knowing the love of his life was gone. He looked at pictures of her everyday, and still in his mind played her last words to him.
He went outside and looked up at the vast, blue sky. He wondered if Lexi was looking down at him. He felt her presence and he smiled. He blew a kiss to the clouds, and said, "God, make sure Lexi gets that."
He turned to go back inside. Adam knew she was still there. She was never going to leave. And Adam felt better knowing that.
Although she wasn't alive on the face of the Earth, she was alive in his heart.
Always.
